Summer Theatre ready to sizzle
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 9 years, 10 months AGO
The first production of Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre's 2015 season is "First Date."
Summer Theatre Executive Director Laura Little and Artistic Director Jadd Davis saw the pre-Broadway run in Seattle and they were each immediately enamored with the smart comedy.
Little went on to become one of the co-producers of "First Date" on Broadway and now CST is one of the first regional theaters to produce the show since it closed in New York City after a 174-performance run. A rapid-fire spin on the pitfalls of modern dating, "First Date" is described as being as heartwarming as it is hilarious. The plot: neurotic Aaron meets his stoic blind date Casey at a New York City bar. They do their best to navigate their own jitters and insecurities while trying to figure out if either is "the one." The remaining five actors in the cast all play multiple characters, portraying a waiter, ex-wife, sister, best friend, and various other roles all ratcheting up the frenzied stakes for Aaron and Casey. "First Date" will be held at the Eagles Lodge in Coeur d'Alene and patrons will be seated at tables and can order beverages so they feel part of the "bar scene." This show sold out the first two nights but more seats have been added to accommodate the demand.
"First Date" will run from June 18-21 at the Coeur d'Alene Eagles Lodge, 209 E. Sherman Ave. All tickets are $25. Beverages and snacks available for purchase.
Up next is "Singin' in the Rain." The show, based on the classic 1952 movie, includes many iconic songs and characters.
Despite its familiarity, "Singin' in the Rain" is technically demanding, but the CST team isn't shying away from the challenges of producing theater magic. They say they will make it rain. They will shoot a movie within a play, and yes, there will be plenty of tap dancing.
"Singin' in the Rain" will run from July 9-26 at the Salvation Army Kroc Center in Coeur d'Alene, 1765 W. Golf Course Road.
Ticket prices $27/children, $42/senior and $49/adults.
"Shrek the Musical" will run from Aug. 6-23, also at the Kroc Center.
Based on the Dreamworks movie, "Shrek the Musical" is a modern spin on classic fairy tales, where the Ogre (Shrek) becomes the hero. The pop-rock score includes songs like "Freak Flag," "Morning Person" and "Who I'd Be."
Ticket prices $27/children, $42/senior and $49/adult.
CST will also host two staged readings at the Kroc Center this summer:
* July 22 "Around the World in 80 Days"
* Aug. 19 "On Golden Pond"
Ticket prices for each of the readings is $25.
