Two people were injured in a collision at the intersection of U.S. Highway 2 and California Avenue in Libby Monday evening.

The accident was reported to sheriff’s dispatch at 6:07 p.m., with Libby Police Officer John Powell responding, along with Libby Volunteer Fire Department, Libby Volunteer Ambulance and Advanced Life Support. 

“It appeared that, what I’ll call Vehicle One, a white Nissan pick-up, was attempting to make a left turn onto California Avenue from Highway 2,” Powell said. “He didn’t yield properly and a black Hummer collided with him.”

The driver of the pick-up truck was cited for a right-of-way violation.

The airbag in the pick-up truck deployed upon impact, but the one in the Hummer did not. The driver of the Hummer appeared to have suffered potentially serious injuries, but was checked and released from Cabinet Peaks Medical Center following the accident.

“It could possibly have been a broken collar bone,” he said. “That’s what I heard them saying when I checked in at the hospital.”

Powell said alcohol was not a factor in the accident and both drivers were wearing their safety belts.
