Jim Herby passed away peacefully at home May 19, 2015, surrounded by his family, after a brief, but fierce battle with cancer. Jim was born October 14, 1948 in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, the oldest child of Herman and Florence Herby. Growing up Jim was an excellent baseball player and was a star pitcher for his teams all the way thru American Legion ball. He was also the Minnesota State Junior Golden Gloves boxing champion at the age of 12. After attending School in Hopkins, Minnesota for 11 years Jim finished his senior year of high school in Sylmar, California. In December of 1968 Jim married Cindy Dazell who became the mother of his two children, James Lee Herby and Connie Christine (Herby) Young. Jim moved to Coeur d'Alene in 1969. He also resided in Meridian and Boise, Idaho, and Ketchikan, Alaska. In November of 2004 Jim married his best friend, Rita Skan Herby. Jim's careers included building and framing, truck driving and most recently driving for the Community Library Network. Jim's favorite activities included spending endless hours in the woods cutting firewood, camping, hunting and fishing in Alaska. Jim left behind a lifetime of memories. As we say goodbye, we will be confronted by all the memories and good times that we shared with him.
Jim is survived by his wife, Rita of Coeur d'Alene; his son Jimmy Lee Herby (wife Pam) of Twin Lakes; daughter Connie Young (husband John) of Hayden; grandchildren Jill Herby, Jake Herby, Maryssa Lovoi, and Christian Young; his mother Florence Herby of Coeur d'Alene; sister, Mary (David) Ballard of Coeur d'Alene; brother, Bruce (Dortha) Herby of Hayden; sister, Peggy (Mike) Sawicki of Coeur d'Alene; brother, Chris (Ginnie) Herby of Ketchikan, Alaska and sister, Carol Herby of Coeur d'Alene; numerous nieces and nephews with whom he was very close; and aunts and uncles. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Herman Herby in 2006.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Todd Hoopman and Hospice of North Idaho for helping Jim spend his last days in the comfort of his home. Graveside services will be held at Coeur d'Alene Riverview Cemetery on Wednesday, May 27 at 3:00 PM, friends and family are welcome. In lieu of flowers the family would like memorials sent to Hospice of North Idaho. Yates Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
