Senior pranks get creative in 2015

A Craigslist real estate for sale ad has provided entertainment as it made the social media rounds over the weekend.
The ad reads, "$2015 Needs Gone! (Post Falls), tired of this place! I have no more need for it as it has made the past four years of my life hell. Great place, but need gone! Comes with MANY rooms, lots of bathrooms, office, art rooms, shop, mini store, kitchen and computer labs. Also comes with a track, gym, football, softball, baseball and soccer field! My loss your gain! $2015 that's a great price!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Available June 2."
The accompanying photos show Post Falls High School and graduation day this year coincides with the "seller's" available date. I give high points for creativity, but excessive use of exclamation points warrants an A- for the anonymous senior who posted the ad.
On Saturday morning I visited my father's gravesite at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d'Alene to decorate for Memorial Day. Boy Scout Troop 3 had just finished placing flags on veterans graves, including Dad's and then posed for a group picture with the Civil War statue. I thanked their scoutmaster Phil Corliss, who told me this is the fifth year the troop volunteered with flag duty.
The cemetery has many historic graves and through the years I've noticed people power washing the headstones. As I was leaving I stopped to visit with a man wearing a "Got Freedom?" T-shirt, who was working his way down a row of old veterans' headstones. Turns out he's Carl Gidlund, a retired Lt. Col. who served in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force, and served in the Special Forces during the Vietnam War. He told me caring for the gravesites of those long passed is his way of showing respect, one veteran to another. I looked down at the simple headstone that was now gleaming in the sunlight ... it bore the name David Dufault, a soldier from the Spanish/American War. Veteran to veteran, generation to generation.
Places to go, things to do ...
Thursday from 5-8 p.m., let the Prairie American Legion baseball team and their parents cook dinner. The spaghetti feed/silent auction benefits the Legion baseball program and is just $7 per person at the Post Falls American Legion, 1138 E. Poleline Ave. On Friday the third annual Guns vs Hoses hockey game pits local firefighters against police officers - on ice skates. The action starts at 6 p.m. at Frontier Ice Arena and includes a silent auction, raffles and a shoot the puck contest. Proceeds go to the Kootenai County Police and Fire Memorial Foundation and the Wounded Warrior Project.
The Be the Match event for the bone marrow registry is at NIC from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Info at www.bethematch.org.
The Post Falls Distinguished Young Women program is Saturday at 7 p.m. at Post Falls High School. Kudos to Marci Clark, a working wife and mother of a 13-year-old son. She assumed the leadership role just a few months ago as it was doubtful that after 27 years the 2015 scholarship program would take place. As the chairman of the program, Marci's already modeled to the young women participating that stepping outside your comfort zone at any stage of life has its rewards.

Tomorrow, Shirlee Wandrocke, Scott Shellman, Dane Dugan, Ryan Shuck, John Caylor, Melissa Feusier, Vance Ackley and Judy Padilla will blow out their candles. Louisa St John Durkin, Star Shewey, Tiffany Williams, Jeff Pryse, Butch Andrews, Donnie Shuck (30!) and Pehr Black have fabulous Friday birthdays.
On Saturday, Matt Weaver, Justin Curtis, Sheila Spears, Chloe Fleming, Chip Wideen and Becky Bridges will be celebrating. Cindy Wood, Roger Beaulieu, Diane Huber, Lindsay Cantrell, Peggy Suenkel, Meredith Close and Craig Singer (60!) are putting on their party hats Sunday.
Starting the month of June with birthdays on the first are Sandy Shopbell, Dave Stutzke, Shannon Coles, Debbie Costa, Patrick Booth, Drake Foster, Mike Alexander, Tresa Brown and Vicki White.
Sharing June 2 birthdays are Al Williams, Mitch Alexander, Nancy Mueller, Brenda Walters, Irene Seidler and Nels Jensen.
