Work begins on new footbridge across Whitefish River

Construction has finally started on a new footbridge spanning the Whitefish River.
The Skye Park footbridge will cross the river at Oregon Avenue near City Beach. It is considered a major link to the city-wide pedestrian trail system. It will also provide secondary access for emergency vehicles to reach the Birch Point neighborhood.
The $1 million bridge will span 180 feet across the river with a shorter 40-foot span along the bank of the south side of the river. A weathered steel design will be similar to the city’s other pedestrian bridges.
This week, cranes placed barges into the river and crews started construction on the segment of bridge connected to Birch Point. Concrete foundations are in place on each side of the river.
Bridge components should arrive early next week, according to city manager Chuck Stearns, when they will be set in place with cranes.
The river will be obstructed during portions of the project and a portage will be marked on the north side of the river.
Tax-increment finance funds are dedicated for the project that has been in the works since 2012.
