NIC WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cards ousted in double overtime

PORT ANGELES, Wash. — Tremendous heart was one thing that worked in favor of the North Idaho College women’s soccer team in the quarterfinals of the Northwest Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday.
A goal in the 105th minute by top-ranked Peninsula ended the match in a hard fought 1-0 loss in double overtime.
Ellie Small scored unassisted in the 105th minute, sending the Pirates to the NWAC final four next week.
After a foul was called outside the left side of the penalty area, Peninsula’s Myu Ban tried to shoot the ball inside the near post, but NIC goalie Cassy Van Der Mey saved the shot, and attempted to tip it wide of the post. The ball hit the left post and bounced back onto the field, where a flood of players collided with the ball and Van Der Mey, resulting in the ball crossing the goal line.
“It was a great match,” NIC coach Dan Hogan said. “To travel to Port Angeles and play the No. 1-ranked NWAC team on their home pitch and having lost to them 5-0 earlier this year, all the players played with tremendous heart. Playoff games often aren’t won with beautiful goals. And that was definitely the case here.”
NIC finishes 11-6-2.
“It was a good game in which we had our own opportunities,” Hogan said. “But we couldn’t put the ball in the net. The player of the game was really the whole defense starting with Van Der May and including Aitana Vernon, Lexi Smith, Alex Rankin and Corinne Ariss. They really locked down the Pirates’ attack.”
Peninsula (20-1-0) — which has scored 85 goals this season — will face the winner of the Clark-Highline match at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Wash.
“It was a good season for the Cardinals making it one step further in the playoffs than they did last year,” Hogan said.
