Two local students will be leaders in fighting childhood hunger.

Flathead High School juniors Sophia Skwarchuk and Stephanie Woodland are among 20 middle- and high-school students across Montana selected to serve on the Governor and First Lady Youth Leadership Council for the 2015-16 school year.

As part of the council, students are tasked with raising awareness of the issue of childhood hunger in their respective schools and communities. Students will implement projects during Fight Childhood Hunger Week, a Global Youth Service Day project, April 11-17, 2016.

On Saturday, Gov. Steve Bullock and first lady Lisa Bullock met with members of the council during a full-day retreat at the state Capitol to discuss solutions to ending childhood hunger in Montana.

Members of the council will return to their schools and begin implementing projects culminating into Fight Childhood Hunger Week in April. This will mark the second time the Youth Leadership Council has implemented a statewide Fight Childhood Hunger Week.
