The Columbia Falls Wildkats made their own luck last week as they roared to the Class A volleyball state championship.

The Kats overcame some rough opening moments on Thursday and proceeded to march undefeated through the tournament and give Columbia Falls its first volleyball state title since 2009.

Columbia Falls finished the season 20-3 and achieved the top trophy a year after finishing second at state.

The Wildkats demonstrated their resilience in their title run: After winning their first 13 matches this season, the Wildkats lost their regular season finale, lost twice in the Western A divisional tournament and lost a key player to injury.

But they won them all when they mattered at state.

Great job, Wildkats!

Osweiler gets his big chance

It’s only one game, but it’s a big one for Brock Osweiler.

The star athlete who grew up in Kalispell and graduated from Flathead High School is the starting quarterback Sunday for the Denver Broncos.

Thanks to injuries to future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning, Osweiler finally gets his chance at the helm of the struggling Broncos offense.

Known during his younger years for his size as well as his skills, Osweiler certainly is a memorable figure to many who observed his football and basketball exploits in Kalispell.

Now he’s in pretty elite company: There are only 32 starting signal-callers on any given weekend in the NFL.

You can be assured that plenty of local fans — beyond the legions of regular Broncos backers — will tune in Sunday at 11 a.m. to see how our local football legend does on the big stage.

We join them in hoping Brock puts on a great show.

Good luck, Bulldogs!

Speaking of great achievements, the Whitefish Bulldogs are on the cusp of the Montana Class A state football championship.

The Bulldogs face perennial power Dillon on Saturday afternoon in the title game.

When Whitefish takes the field in Dillon, the Bulldogs will hope to end a 36-year title drought, since the last time the Bulldogs won state in football was 1979.

The title game promises to be a classic matchup: Whitefish’s only loss this season is to Dillon — by one point because the Beavers scored a 2-point conversion near the end of the game.

We know lots of local fans will be on hand to root their team on. Good luck, Bulldogs, in Dillon. Let’s bring home a trophy to put next to the one from 1979.
