NIC ROUNDUP: Cardinals finish 10th in NJCAA volleyball tournament

CASPER, Wyo. — In its final NJCAA tournament before dropping to the Northwest Athletic Conference in the 2016-17 season, the North Idaho College volleyball team fell to the 13th-seeded Hutchinson (Kan.) Blue Dragons 25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 14-25, 15-11 in the match for ninth and 10th places on Saturday at the Casper Events Center.

Freshman Brittany Gay of Lake City High had 48 assists and 14 digs for NIC, which finishes 22-15 in coach Kelsey Stanley’s second year. Penny Gwynn had 14 kills and nine digs and sophomore Brenna Meehan had 13 kills for NIC.

Jai Chapaman had 18 kills for Hutchinson (34-9).

In the championship match, Southern Idaho (35-3) rallied from down two sets to one to beat Western Nebraska (42-5) 25-22, 23-25, 24-26, 25-22, 15-9 for the school’s 11th national title.

AUBURN, Wash. — Braian Angola-Rodas had 27 points and, six rebounds and five assists to lead the Cardinals past the Gators in a nonconference game.

Brayon (BJ) Blake scored 16 points and former Lake City High standout Kyle Guice had 16 points and eight rebounds for NIC (6-0), which travels to Columbia Basin of Pasco, Wash., on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

“Those guys are rally good and Kyle played really well tonight,” said NIC coach Corey Symons, whose team went 10 of 23 from the free throw line. “We need to be able to hit free throws. They’re playing well and those are more of a confidence thing. The guys are playing well together. It should be a fun year.”

Marcus Harris, who played at NIC as a freshman, had 13 points and three rebounds for Green River (1-1).

Cardinals drop two in at home duals

COEUR d’ALENE — The Cardinals got Deondre Wilson back from a torn ACL, but lost a pair of duals to Simon Fraser and Highline at Christianson Gym in the Cardinal Duals.

“Give both Highline and Simon Fraser credit, they wrestled hard and we did not,” NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. “We need to get over the illness and injury bug, but we’ll get another shot at it. It’s no fun to go through though. We need to learn from it and move on. We just need to be better, period.”

NIC hosts the Spokane Open at the Spokane Convention Center today at 9 a.m.
