Glacier football seems to have righted the ship after a pair of early losses, opening up the offense the last two weeks in a pair of impressive wins.

The Wolfpack (3-2) has scored 130 points the last two weeks, and is entering a matchup with Missoula Sentinel (3-2) that has been one of the most exciting games on the schedule the last few years.

Aside from Glacier’s standout season a year ago, four of the five games before that were close throughout, including a 59-41 shootout in the University of Montana’s Washington-Grizzly Stadium in 2013.

In each of the last three games, Glacier has scored at least 51 points against the Spartans.

“We’ve really had some wild games with Sentinel,” Glacier coach Grady Bennett said.

“Back and forth, tight. I think this year it’s another great matchup.”

While Glacier has gotten the best of the Sentinel defense the last few tries, the Spartans pack some punch on offense this year.

Dual-threat quarterback Mitch Roberts has been sensational for Sentinel this season, running for 123 yards and completing 10 of 12 passes for three touchdowns in a win last week against Billings Skyview.

The Spartans’ junior has averaged 194 yards of total offense a game, third in the state, just behind Glacier quarterback Leif Ericksen.

“We know the Roberts family, they’re tremendous athletes,” Bennett said.

Both Roberts’ older brother and sister are NCAA Division I athletes after stellar careers for Sentinel: Ben, a baseball player at Washington State who passed up the MLB Draft to play his senior season for the Montana football team; and Olivia, a forward on the Wyoming women’s basketball team.

“He runs the ball really well,” Bennett said of Mitch Roberts.

“This is the first time we’ve seen a running quarterback that that’s what he wants to do first, is run the ball. We’re going to have to spy him in the passing game and be disciplined in the run game with him. It’s going to be a challenge for our defense for sure.”

Glacier has found its form on offense behind a running game of its own. Wolfpack senior Thomas Trefney is averaging more than 131 yards rushing and scored five touchdowns in the first half of last week’s blowout win over Hellgate.

A revamped offensive line is contributing to that form, helping Trefney and giving Ericksen time to find open receivers in the pocket.

“We’re proud of the kids and how they’ve busted out and got rolling,” Bennett said. “I think our key has been the offensive line. It’s a brand new crew this year. They’re starting to gel. It’s really exciting stuff to watch them get better.”

The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Legends Stadium and will be broadcast locally on The Monster, 103.9 FM.
