League play for most area football teams starts next week, but there’s still some interesting matchups tonight.

Coeur d’Alene (4-1) at Hermiston (0-4): The Vikings won last year’s matchup 31-27 in Coeur d’Alene, though the visiting Bulldogs thought they had recovered a fumble in the closing minutes to seal a win, only to see the ball awarded to Coeur d’Alene, which went on to score the winning touchdown.

It turned out to be the lone loss for Hermiston, which went on to win the Oregon class 5A (second-largest schools) title. This year, the Bulldogs are winless and coming off a 56-37 loss at Lewiston, which visits Coeur d’Alene in next week’s 5A Inland Empire League opener. Hermiston has given up 203 points in its four losses this year.

Lake City (1-4) at Sandpoint (2-3): Lake City, which opens 5A IEL play next week at Post Falls, begins the North Idaho portion of its schedule tonight at Barlow Stadium. The Timberwolves, missing a handful of starters to injury, played well last week over the final three quarters, nearly digging all the way out of a 21-point hole vs. Tumwater (Wash.) before falling 35-21 to the 2A power. Sandpoint is 1-1 vs. 5A IEL teams, beating Post Falls 20-19 at the Kibbie Dome and losing 42-39 to Lewiston at home.

Lake City has won 10 of the last 11 meetings with Sandpoint, including the last five.

Post Falls (3-2) at Moses Lake (2-2): Post Falls has won its last two games by a combined 104-14. The Chiefs lost just 17-14 at Coeur d’Alene two weeks ago.

Timberlake (2-2) at Lakeland (0-5): Lakeland, which opens 4A IEL play next week at Sandpoint, has won the last five meetings with Timberlake, including a 71-21 triumph last year in Spirit Lake. Timberlake opens Intermountain League play next Friday at home vs. Priest River.

St. Maries (5-0) at Bonners Ferry (2-2): The 2A Lumberjacks, off to their best start in two decades, are already 3-0 vs. the 3A IML, including a 54-12 trouncing of Priest River last week. Bonners Ferry beat Priest River 24-18 in the season opener.

Lewis County (1-3, 0-2 White Star League) at Kootenai (0-4, 0-3): Lewis County’s lone victory came 60-20 over Lakeside, which beat Kootenai 44-18 last week.

Clark Fork (3-0, 1-0 WSL) at Lakeside (1-4, 1-1): It’s been an odd year for the Wampus Cats, who went two weeks between games, then played twice in five days. Clark Fork will be playing for the first time since Sept. 22, when the Cats beat nearby Noxon (Mont.) 26-6 in a rare Tuesday tilt.

“I’ve been very impressed by Zach’s natural ability to rush the passer,” Eck said. “And he’s worked hard on his body, he’s up to about 222 pounds now, and I really think he can be a difference maker for us. He’s still doing some things with the linebackers, but I think his speed can give some offensive linemen problems (as an edge rusher).”

“The whole process has been completely amazing,” said Nathan Williams, now in his fourth season as the Badgers boys basketball coach. “And the parents … it’s an hour and a half to Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, when we’d play an AAU game, and an hour and a half back, and there were so many times there was 6, 8 inches of snow. And we’ve got a game at 8 a.m. They’d always schedule us at 8 a.m., coming from Bonners. So we’re waking up at 5 … it was crazy. But the commitment from the parents and the kids has been amazing.”
