(NAPSI)—Here’s news many building owners may greet warmly: Using spray foam insulation as a roofing material can help make your place more comfortable and durable.

This is possible because spray polyurethane foam insulation offers versatility that most other insulation products do not. Depending on the project and type of spray foam, it can serve as an air barrier, a moisture barrier and can even offer structural support.

And this versatility has made certain high-density, closed-cell spray foam insulations an increasingly popular choice as a roofing material in many renovation and new construction projects.

Traditional roofing systems often depend on several layers of materials, such as waterproofing membranes, decking and insulation, to protect their buildings. A spray foam roof, however, can limit the layers of materials and decrease the weight on the building. Combined with a coating material, spray foam roofing can remove the need for a separate waterproofing membrane, as it’s seamless and self-flashing, which helps keep water from seeping through weak spots, such as fasteners and seams. It can also be installed in a sloped manner, providing better drainage.

Additionally, it’s excellent for installing around roof-mounted mechanical equipment, such as air-cooling units, or in narrow and other awkward spaces, as it is sprayed into place and then expands to fill the area. Spray foam roofing can also increase the structure’s resistance to wind uplift, helping reduce potential damage.

With an effective life span that can exceed 30 years, a spray foam roof can be an excellent choice for many structures, providing insulation, strength and protection.
