A bear is dead after attacking a man near Olney on Saturday, according to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and the Flathead County dispatch center.

The man contacted dispatchers at about 5 p.m. Saturday and said he had killed a grizzly after it attacked him.

“It did result in a dead bear, and there were no injuries,” said Tim Manley, the regional grizzly bear manager for the state agency.

State game warden Nathan Reiner declined to provide any further information, citing the ongoing investigation.

The incident appears to be the latest in a string of regional incidents involving bears, who have become more active as they enter hyperphagia, a natural process in which the bears’ appetites increase as they prepare for winter hibernation.

On Thursday an elderly woman died less than a week after being attacked by a black bear in her home near Ashley Lake, and a hunter was hospitalized over the weekend after a grizzly attacked him north of Choteau.
