Sandpoint romps past Lakeland

SANDPOINT — Sure, Sandpoint dispatched Lakeland 48-14 on Friday night in 4A Inland Empire League opener on Friday night at Barlow Stadium, but that’s not what anyone in attendance will most remember years from now.

When an NFL legend returns to his hometown, bringing with him a gold gift from the NFL, well, let’s just say the night belonged to one Jerry Kramer.

The former Bulldog, Idaho Vandal and Green Bay Packers lineman shook hands, signed autographs and reminisced with old friends, before presenting SHS with the gold football at half, given by the NFL to the high school every former player or coach who was part of a Super Bowl.

Kramer talked for a few minutes at halftime with Bulldog captains Paul Sundquist, Carlos Collado, Kyle Perry and Davan Norris, even showing them his Super Bowl II ring, which made for some wide eyes among the players.

The Bulldogs (4-3, 1-0 4A IEL) started fast, marching down the field on their first four possessions to take a quick 28-0 lead in the first quarter. Kyle Perry ran for 124 yards on 22 carries, but still appeared hampered from a turf toe injury, while Michael Plaster rushed for 74 yards and three touchdowns to help stake the Bulldogs to a 35-0 halftime lead.

Joshua Brandt got the rebuilding Hawks (0-7, 0-1 4A IEL) on the board in the third quarter with a three yard plunge, Jared Walker took over at quarterback and capped a late touchdown drive with a seven yard scamper, and Kaden Davis had an interception in defeat.

Lakeland travels to Pullman on Friday.
