Fires in the Kootenai National Forest have forced several trail closures, although more than half an inch of rain over the weekend helped crews fighting the two active fires.

Area closures include:

• Little Hoodoo Road 6203 north from its junction with Cherry Creek Road 867.

• Along the private property boundary in Sections 20 and 29 to Deep Creek and west to the creek’s upper end.

• From the upper end of Deep Creek south to Bockman Peak and southwest to Snowshoe Peak.

• From Snowshoe Peak southeast to Snowshoe Lakes.

• From Snowshoe Creek east to the confluence with Big Cherry Creek and north to the junction of Forest Roads 867 and 6203.

• Snowshoe Lake Trail 125.

• Leigh Lake Trail 132.

• Leigh Lake Road 4786.

• Cherry Creek Road 867 from its junction with Forest Road 6203 to the road’s end.

The Klatawa Fire has been burning for about two months and has covered a 5,112-acre area near the Idaho border. In a Monday morning press release, forest spokesman Willie Sykes said the wildfire grew little growth in the past day, with fire lines holding steady despite strong winds on Sunday.

Crews constructed additional lines Monday on the fire’s northeast and southeast flanks. Heavy helicopters provided air support on the fire’s upper ridge.

The 180-acre Smearl Fire burning in the Leigh Lake area is 70 percent contained and also had little growth after receiving 0.8 inches of rain Sunday night.

Forest officials remind hunters and other outdoor recreationists to be careful with campfires and make sure they are completely extinguished before leaving them.
