CAREYWOOD — Bonner County sheriff's deputies are investigating a break-in at the Selkirk Fire Rescue & EMS station beside U.S. Highway 95.

The burglary was discovered on Tuesday during a routine check on the unmanned station, said Capt. Ron Reed of the Sagle Fire District, which operates jointly with the Sandpoint Fire Department. A chainsaw and four vehicle batteries were taken in the heist.

Reed estimated that the batteries and chainsaw are worth up to $1,400. Damage was also done to the door by whoever stole the equipment.

The door has been repaired, but Reed said the district can do little else to protect the station from thieves and also vandals, who have also struck the station.
