The Park Service's centennial year will likely be a good time to drive the full length of the Going-to-the-Sun Road as construction should be fairly light. The main work project will center around reconstruction and redesign of the east entrance of the road at St. Mary, said park spokeswoman Katie Liming.

The plan is to redesign the entrance station to make it easier for traffic to flow into the park. There will also be a parking area just past the entrance to inspect boats and other watercraft for aquatic invasive species like zebra mussels.

Crews will do some work on the road's west side. They plan on patching up sections of rock wall that were damaged by avalanches last winter. That damage was about 100 feet total.

The original schedule was to start road construction from Apgar to Avalanche in 2016, but that work now wonít start until 2017. That's the last section of the highway that needs to be worked on. Reconstruction of the road began in earnest in 2007, with an appropriation of $50 million by then Sen. Max Baucus.

Since then, there hasn't been a summer where one section or another of the road hasnít been rebuilt or repaired.
