Presidio Brass, presented by Flathead Valley LIVE On Stage, will perform in Kalispell on Monday to open the 2015-16 FVLOS concert season.

Presidio Brass will be performing a show called “Sounds of the Cinema,” featuring classic film music, at Flathead High School, 644 Fourth Ave. W., Kalispell, at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 19.

Presidio Brass was first formed in 2006. The comedy and musical quintet includes Steve O’Connor on trumpet, Miles McAllister on trumpet, Geoffrey Durbin on euphonium and trombone, Josh Bledsoe on trombone, and Scott Sutherland on tuba and piano.

According to the group’s website, “each member of the ensemble began his music career by joining their school’s band program. Inspired by the dedication of their school music teachers, Presidio Brass came together with the primary mission to promote music education and music appreciation in youngsters. For this very reason, performances are often coupled with a master class or school program for which the quintet volunteers their time.”

The Kalispell concert is no exception. The group is holding a master class for local high school students on Monday morning. They will also feature a 55-member student ensemble — comprised entirely of students from the five local high schools — at the concert performance Monday night.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our kids to be involved with these artists,” said Allen Slater, band director of Flathead High School. “Working with [Presidio] catipults them to the next level.

“This is the talent of the future being featured in concert.”

Members of Presidio Brass have performed with major symphony orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Las Vegas Philharmonic, Pacific Symphony and San Diego Symphony, and have shared the stage with commercial and pop artists that include Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, Quincy Jones and more. When not on tour, they continue to perform throughout the country as freelance artists, maintain private teaching studios at local universities, arrange and compose new music, assist with public school music programs, and operate an annual summer music camp in San Diego for brass students of all ages.

By combining a brass quintet, piano and percussion instruments with original arrangements, Presidio’s sound has become a trademark for the ensemble.

In addition to performing as a brass quintet, Presidio Brass performs regularly as a part of Millennia Consort, one of the nation’s premiere brass, organ and percussion ensembles. Millennia Consort is active in commissioning new works as well as arrangements of popular classical music. The latest recording by the ensemble, “Pictures of a New Beginning,” includes commissions of new music by Craig Phillips, John Hirten and Jon Naples, and features an arrangement of the orchestral favorite “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Sutherland.

Presidio Brass has released four albums: “Stolen Moments,” a collection of popular classical and jazz selections; “Christmas Day,” an assortment of well-loved holiday favorites; “Sounds of the Cinema,” which includes pieces from their signature stage performance of the same name; and their newest release “Rhapsody in Brass,” featuring popular American music influenced by classical and jazz idioms.
