Lake City, Cd'A to play for state volleyball berth
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 9 years, 3 months AGO
They both finished 5-1 in 5A Inland Empire League volleyball play, and traded wins with each other on their home courts.
The difference — Lake City beat Coeur d’Alene 3 games to 1, and Coeur d’Alene beat Lake City 3 games to 2.
That’s why Tuesday night’s 5A Region 1 volleyball championship match between second-seeded Coeur d’Alene (20-4), last year’s state runner-up, and top-seeded Lake City (21-4), will be played at Lake City, beginning at 7 p.m.
“Our last few matches with them have been hard-fought battles and were played in front of great crowds,” first-year Lake City coach Brian Hosfeld said. “I’m hoping the student body and community comes out and supports this team again. The growth that we’ve had through out the year has been tremendous and I know our best volleyball is yet to come. We’re looking forward to a great match Tuesday.”
Coeur d’Alene has been without Idaho recruit Megan Ramseyer (torn ACL) since early in the season. The Vikings were also without standout outside hitter Missy Huddleston in their loss at Lake City, though she was back for Coeur d’Alene’s win at home over the Timberwolves last week.
Tuesday’s winner advances to state Oct. 30-31, at either Coeur d’Alene, Lake City or Post Falls High (depending on who qualifies for state, as teams can’t play at state on their home court). In a loser-out match Tuesday, Lewiston (14-13) plays as Post Falls (15-17) at 7 p.m. The two remaining teams play Thursday for a berth in a state play-in match Saturday in Grangeville.
The 4A Region 1 volleyball tournament begins Tuesday with a loser-out match sending No. 3 Lakeland to No. 2 Moscow. The winner travels to No. 1 Sandpoint on Thursday for a best-of-3-match championship series. The winner advances to state; the loser goes to Grangeville on Saturday for a state play-in match.
The 3A District 1 tourney begins Tuesday at Timberlake, with Kellogg vs. Bonners Ferry at 5:30 p.m., and top-seeded Timberlake vs. Priest River at 7. The championship match is Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Timberlake; the runner-up can make it to state through the play-in route.
The 2A District 1-2 tournament resumes Thursday at Troy, with St. Maries playing either Grangeville or Orofino in the championship match. If St. Maries loses, an if-necessary match would be played Saturday. One team advances to state.
“St. Maries is, I would say, somewhat of a powerhouse,” Orofino coach Shannon Erbst told the Lewiston Tribune on Saturday, after the Lumberjacks whipped the Maniacs in the semifinals. “They have three girls who can attack the ball well.”
The 1A Division I District 1 tournament begins Thursday, with Genesis Prep facing Mullan in a loser-out match. That winner joins Clark Fork, Lakeside and top-seeded Kootenai for the rest of the tourney Saturday at Lake City High. Only the district champ advances to state.
• Cross country: All the state-qualifying meets for North Idaho teams will be held Thursday at Farragut State Park. The 5A and 4A girls races are scheduled for 11:30 a.m., followed by the 5A and 4A boys at noon, 3A girls at 12:30 p.m., 3A boys at 1:15, 2A and 1A girls at 2 and 2A and 1A boys at 2:30.
State in all five classifications is Oct. 31 at Farragut State Park.
• Soccer: Six local teams qualified for state this Thursday through Saturday in Meridian, Eagle, Caldwell and Middleton.

In 4A, Lakeland’s boys face Blackfoot on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Brothers Park in Caldwell.
In 3A, Coeur d’Alene Charter’s girls open vs. Shelley on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Brothers Park in Caldwell; and Timberlake’s girls open vs. Community School at Brothers Park, also at 10.
