PREP SOCCER: Viking, Panther girls punch tickets to state tournaments

MOSCOW — Jackie Jensen stopped eight shots for Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy in a 3-0 win over the Payette Pirates in a state 3A tournament play-in game Saturday to advance to this week’s tournament at Brothers Park in Caldwell.

“Payette’s defense and goalie meant business, but our girls kept working and found the answers in the second half,” said Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Dave Baxter, whose team opens the state tournament on Thursday against Shelley. “We needed and got some excellent performances for our freshmen players including Elizabeth Lehosit, Cali Shipman and Elly Cherrstrom. I am proud of the girls for earning their third consecutive berth to state.”

Shipman, Lehosit and Cecelia McAfee scored second half goals for Coeur d’Alene Charter after a scoreless first half.

Coeur d’Alene Charter (13-5-1) won last year’s state title, beating Intermountain League rival Timberlake in the championship match.

LEWISTON — The Vikings (9-4-1) punched their ticket to the state 5A tournament with a win over the Lions in a play-in game at Walker Field.

Coeur d’Alene opens the tournament on Thursday at Rocky Mountain High in Meridian against Centennial of Boise at 1 p.m., PDT.

LEWISTON — Harley Hendry scored an unassisted goal in the 65th minute for the Hawks, who lost to the Vikings in a state 4A play-in match at Walker Field.

LEWISTON — Shawn McKeeken had 10 saves for the Vikings, who lost 4-2 in a shootout with the Falcons in a state 5A tournament play-in game at Walker Field.

“Our guys played their hearts out and left everything they had on the field,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Lake said. “I’ve got nothing negative to say about the game. The boys did everything they could to advance to state. It’s brutal, but I’m so proud of my team.”

Lane Thompson and Justin Kofmehl scored in the shootout for Coeur d’Alene, which finishes 6-8.

“Shawn continued to make big save after big save to keep us in it,” Lake said. “Hats off to Shawn and the entire team. They had a heck of a season, and it sucks to end this way, but that’s the sport.”

Vallivue will face Centennial in the opening round of the state tournament on Thursday at Eagle High.

MOSCOW — The Huskies outshot the Lumberjacks 28-2 in a state 3A play-in game at Moscow Junior High to advance to state at Brothers Park in Caldwell starting on Thursday.

St. Maries, which upset top seeded Timberlake in a shootout in the District 1 semifinals, finishes 4-11-2.

“Emmett’s a very, very fast and talented team,” said St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo, whose team did not have a senior on the roster. “They’re a good team, no question about it. It was a good experience for our kids. They improved all season and did what I asked them to do all year long. They really came a long way.”
