District 7B football: Troy gets one final shot at district title

BIGFORK – One point is all that has separated Sean Opland and Troy from the Class B playoffs each of the last two years.
And one point is all they’ll need to win by tonight to claim their first District 7B title since 1991.
The Trojans (2-5, 2-1 District 7B) travel to take on six-time defending champion Bigfork tonight at 7 p.m. with the district title and a state playoff berth on the line.
“We all know that if we lose, we’re out,” Opland said of the matchup. “If we want to keep going we have to put everything into this.”
Opland, the Trojans’ standout quarterback and linebacker, is gunning for a win over the Vikings (4-3, 2-1) for the first time in his four-year career.
Troy started the season 0-4 but has won two of its last three, including a three-point win over Thompson Falls a week ago on the Trojans’ senior night.
“We proved (last week) that what we can do is something to be reckoned with,” Opland said. “It’s going to be (Bigfork’s) senior night, on their field, in their last game so we’ve got to come in more fired up and ready to go than we did against Thompson Falls.”
With nine seniors on the roster, including Opland, Troy coach Brandon Miller has seen a team this week unlike the one he coached earlier this year.
“This senior class, they have a goofiness about them normally,” Miller said. “But this week there’s been a lot less goofing off than normal and a little more focus on what’s coming and what they need to do.
“It’s nice but at the same time a little worrisome because it’s not their normal routine so you can tell the stress is there.”
Opland, who is committed to play football at Montana State, is not worried about the moment becoming too big.
“That hasn’t crossed my mind,” Opland said of the thought that this could be his final game. “I’m just focused on getting ready to go.”
Bigfork’s only district loss came to Thompson Falls three weeks ago, and since then the Vikings have posted emphatic wins against Libby and Eureka. Bigfork boasts a stingy defense and a handful of explosive offensive weapons, led by quarterback Jonathan Landon.
“They’re fast, they’re always fast,” Miller said of the Vikings. “They have some pretty dang good athletes and, skill position-wise, those kids can play. They’re athletic, they can jump, they’re quick, they’re fast and they know how to use it.”
Facing the Vikings attack will be a Trojans defense that has struggled much of the year, allowing more than 30 points per game, so much of the impetus will fall on Opland. The 5-11 senior has run for more than 1,400 yards and accounted for a whopping 20 touchdowns this season, and he’s hoping to extend his Troy career at least one more week.
“I’ve thought about it and a win for me would be a dream come true,” Opland said. “It would be like getting that call for a full ride scholarship to college, that’s how big it is for me right now.”
