It was a week of in-county rivalries for the volleyball teams in the region. Mission played Ronan for their homecoming and senior night, and Arlee traveled to Charlo. Polson split on the week and have their final home games this week.

ARLEE/CHARLO

The Arlee Scarlets finished up their regular season last week playing against the number one and number two teams in the district. Last Tuesday, the Scarlets traveled to Charlo to take on the Vikings, who were playing their last regular season match. In the first game, Charlo took a ten point lead out of the gate, but Arlee battled back, almost pulling out the win until the Vikings recovered and won 25-23. In the second game, both teams came out hitting hard, most notably Carly Hergett and Bryndle Goyins for Arlee and Kaitlin Cox and Cheyenne Nagy from Charlo. However, Charlo’s scrappy defense came though, leading the Vikings to a 25-19 win. In the third, Charlo jumped out to a 10-0 lead before Arlee found their footing. It was too late for the Scarlets by then, and Charlo took the game 25-9 and the match 3-0.

For Charlo, Kaitlin Cox had 14 kills and four aces. Cheyenne Nagy had 12 kills, four blocks, and 21 of Charlo’s 65 digs. Mikaylan Roylance had 27 assists, Allie Delaney had three aces, and Jaycee Andersen added two more of Charlo’s ten aces.

Arlee’s Hergett had eight kills and Ashley Revis had a nice game, including three blocks for the Scarlets. Eden Morin led the team with five digs, and Becca Whitesell had 15 assists.

On Thursday, Arlee traveled to Plains. After a tough loss to the Vikings, Arlee rebounded. In an exciting five game back and forth contest, the Scarlets came out on top. Arlee had previously lost to Plains, but put together a full match of great play to win this time.

Arlee’s Megan Shick led the team with seven kills, and Hergett and Goyins each added three blocks. Abby Yocum had seven digs, Becca Whitesell had 21 assists and added eight aces to put the Scarlets on top.

Charlo goes into the 10C tournament with the number one seed and will take on Two Eagle. Arlee goes in as the number three seed and will take on Superior in their first match.

At Missoula last Thursday, the Lady Pirates had the tedious task of trying to tame a talented tandem of tall Tiede siblings – twice All-State, thrice All-Conference six-foot senior middle blocker Sierra and All-Conference first-team sophomore outside hitter Sam.  The only losses incurred by the 6B Breakers this season had been twice to undefeated Florence and a split with former Class A Anaconda. Although the Lady Pirates out-blocked the tall Breaker lineup and spikes as well as serves were comparable in productivity, the back court of Loyola proved more than adequate to the task of digging out the Polson attack sequences. Haley Fyant and Lauren Lefthand collaborated on 15 kills, while Lydia Dupuis combined with Fyant for a quintet of service aces.  Shawna Lenz and Dupuis combined for two dozen digs with eight others contributing over 20 digs to the defensive effort.

At Dillon on Saturday, the visiting Lady Pirates evaded pitfall and peril at the pond of the host Lady Beavers to capture their fourth non-conference victory of the season.  The Polson attack was firing on all cylinders while the defense repelled Dillon salvos. The Lady Pirates succeeded in turning in their best offensive performance as well as top defensive outing of the season.

Chadelle Smith and Haley Fyant launched just under three dozen spikes, while a half dozen other players contributed another dozen. Senior defensive specialist Marlee Congdon led the Lady Pirates with 19 digs, while Shawna Lenz and Lydia Dupuis contributed another two dozen. Eight other players collaborated upon over three dozen digs to reroute the ball back into play to recalibrate the offense. 

Polson (1-4, 5-7) will have already hosted the visiting Bitterroot Lady Broncs from Hamilton this Tuesday past then close out the regular season on Thursday against Columbia Falls for senior night.

MISSION/RONAN

Mission and Ronan both finished their regular seasons up last week. On Thursday, they played each other in Mission for the Bulldogs’ homecoming and senior night. Ronan took the first game in a tight battle, and then Mission fought their way to a win in the second. Ronan would take the next two to keep the Bulldogs winless. 

Alicia Camel had a nice game with 10 kills for the Maidens. Jordyn Eichert had six kills for Mission. Shaina Snyder of Ronan and Afton Brander of Mission each had two blocks. Sadie Wirz led Ronan with 22 digs, and Mission’s Daisie VandenBos had 16. Snyder also led the stats in aces, while Sophie Tolbert led Mission with three.

On Saturday, both teams went on the road for their last regular season game. 

Mission played Loyola, where they lost in three. They were led by Sydney Castor’s six kills and two blocks. Ran’Dee Charlo had 13 digs, Eichert had eight assists and Tolbert had five aces.

Ronan traveled to Deer Lodge, where they also lost in three. Alicia Camel had another good game with six kills and Siliye Pete added three. Alex Dennis, Jordyn Clairmont, and Sadie Wirz all had eight digs, and Dennis, Clairmont and Alicia Camel each had an ace. Ashley Peterson had two blocks and Lee Camel added another.

Two Eagle River reported one game from last week. In that game, they were defeated by the number two team in the district, Plains. Leading the Eagles in kills was Naomi Stevens, who had three. Casadi Wunderlich had two blocks and four aces. Shay-Lyn Andrew had seven digs and Tyra Michel had five assists. TER goes into the 10C District tournament in eighth place and will play Charlo, who is number one seed.
