COEUR d'ALENE - Toby Schindelbeck, 37, announced Thursday that he will be running against incumbent Coeur d'Alene Councilman Ron Edinger in November.

Schindelbeck says he is a conservative Republican and has been a small business owner since the age of 20. He is currently the owner of Nutrishop Sports Nutrition store in Coeur d'Alene.

"I love Coeur d'Alene and the wonderful people who live here and I want to serve my community to the best of my ability," he said in a press release.

One of Schindelbeck's goals as a city councilman will be to increase the number of sworn officers patrolling the streets.

"There is no doubt about it; public safety is the No. 1 concern I hear from my neighbors and friends. Coeur d'Alene was recently named the most dangerous city in Idaho by the FBI," he said in the release. "This must change. When we are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars per year on public art, I question the priorities of some on the current council."

For example, Schindelbeck said, "$324,000 of our tax dollars were allocated to public art in the 2015 budget. To put it into perspective, we could potentially hire three new police officers for that amount of money."

Another of Schindelbeck's main priorities is to have the city council gain oversight of ignite cda.

"As a taxpayer, I find it offensive that we have an unelected board taking millions of our property tax dollars to spend on projects where the voters have had no say," he said in the release. Schindelbeck said bringing the ignite cda Urban Renewal District under city council control would be a step in the right direction.

"When you elect me to serve as your next Seat 1 city councilor, I will bring new energy and new ideas. I pledge to be a good steward of our tax dollars, to focus on ways to increase the number of officers keeping us safe, and to always be available to the citizens of Coeur d'Alene. Like you, I love this city, and I ask for your vote on Nov. 3. Let's work together to keep Coeur d'Alene great."
