Fire danger caused the cancellation of two popular Labor Day weekend events in Spirit Lake and St. Maries, but there's still plenty of festivities for families to enjoy.
For the first time in 47 years, a fireworks show will not be a part of Paul Bunyan Days in St. Maries.
However, the event, which continues today through Monday, includes a demolition derby today at 1 p.m. at the Benewah County Fairgrounds. Tickets are $10.
The carnival, music and food booths will be at City Park all three days, along with sidewalk sales downtown. Water contest events start at noon today.
On Sunday, a community breakfast will be held at the Eagles Lodge from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A quilt show will be held at Heyburn Elementary, 1404 Main St., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Other highlights include an auction at City Park and kids' pool events - both at noon.
Monday's agenda includes a parade on Main Street at 10 a.m. and logging events at 1 p.m.
Spirit Lake also has activities on tap for the holiday weekend.
The Labor Day on the Grass Car Show sponsored by the chamber of commerce will be held at the big City Park on Sunday at 9 a.m. Trophies will be awarded at 3:30 p.m. There will be live music and a beer garden.
Vendors will be available in the park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday and Monday.
Monday's agenda also includes a parade sponsored by Roy Racy Veterans of Foreign War Post 1473. Director Joy Porter dubs it the "world's second-shortest parade."
"The reason why is, who's going to argue with me for that title?" Porter said.
The parade starts at 11 a.m. and runs for two blocks from Third and Maine to Fourth and Washington.
"I wouldn't be late," Porter said.
There is no fee or pre-registration for entries. Those interested in participating should line up on Third at 10:30 a.m.
The mountain bike ride was canceled this year due to fire danger.
