SPOKANE VALLEY - The Coeur d'Alene Viking football team just needed something to go right.
Some points on the board, a few defensive stops.
Something.
In the waning moments, they got a little something that might go a long way toward turning around that slow start.
Coeur d'Alene quarterback Austin Lee hit Brody Lundblad on a 66-yard touchdown pass with 16 seconds left, lifting the Vikings past the Central Valley Bears 37-30 in a nonleague game on Friday night.
"It was just a classic high school football game," Coeur d'Alene coach Shawn Amos said. "Both sides made some mistakes that the other team was able to capitalize on with turnovers. Both teams just kept slugging it out."
Lundblad, who had a key block near the sideline to spring Lee on a 26-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, was more pleased with that play than the winning score.
"I'm a team guy," Lundblad said. "That catch, anyone could have made that play."
But that catch.
"Once I saw the ball leave Austin's hands, I knew it was a touchdown," Lundblad said. "Touchdown Bro."
"That was a huge play that Brody made, but his block was the stuff you don't see," Amos said. "We had a bunch of guys make big plays. We're playing a lot of guys right now, and they all stepped up and answered the bell tonight."
Lee finished the game with 359 yards passing, and was 4 for 5 on two-point conversion runs to keep the Vikings within striking distance. Cole Ramseyer had five catches for 97 yards and two touchdowns, the first coming with 5:50 remaining in the first half for the Vikings' first points of the season.
Coeur d'Alene beat Central Valley 50-14 in last year's matchup in Coeur d'Alene.
"Even if the outcome would have came out differently, our kids made a huge step from last week," said Amos, whose team lost 22-0 to Skyline of Idaho Falls in its season opener. "They did all the things we asked them to do in practice this week. They really answered the bell. It's a great group of kids and coaches that care about the game. CV is a good program and you've got to get lucky sometime."
Next Friday, Coeur d'Alene hosts Ferris and Central Valley travels to Lake City.
