In a rain-soaked match the Libby boy’s soccer team beat Whitefish in Whitefish for the first time in the program’s history. The Loggers left no doubt who was the better team with their 5-1 victory.
“We’ve never won over there,” Logger coach Mark Petersen said. “It’s a big deal to get our first win in Whitefish. We’ve been state champions twice and even in those state championship seasons we didn’t beat Whitefish in Whitefish. For this team to win decisively in Whitefish is a big deal.”
The win moves the Loggers to 2-0 on the season. The last time they started the season 2-0 they ended the season as state champions.
“The last time we started 2-0 was in 2010,” Petersen said. “It was also the last time we won the state championship.”
Petersen said that Whitefish committed some mistakes and his team took advantage of those mistakes.
“It rained the entire match,” he said. “It was a downpour. We were able to capitalize on their mistakes. All of our goals came fairly easy. We got close and we had a lot of opportunities. The score could have easily been eight or nine to one. We had a lot of chances. It was a great match for us.”
Petersen said he was impressed with the way his team played defensively.
“We saved a penalty kick at the five minute mark,” he said. “We saved it and that was pretty awesome. The only goal they scored came on another penalty kick.”
Cody Wood led the charge for the Loggers scoring four goals. Wood now has seven goals on the season and is currently the goals leader in Class A.
Sage Friss had two assists and scored the other Loggers goal. Ryan Nagle picked up one assist.
Next up for the Loggers is a match against Billings Central in Billings on Friday, Sept. 11. The next day they will square off against Laurel in Laurel.
