Lillian "Joyce" Petersen, 88, of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, passed away on Sept. 6, 2015, at Life Care Center. Joyce was born to Middie John Paranto and Edna Leona Weisbeck Paranto. Joyce was born in White Butte, S.D., on May 21, 1927.
Joyce is survived by her daughters, Victoria (Tori) Howe and husband Thomas of Athol, and Susan (Susi) Whalen and husband Barry of Coeur d'Alene; her granddaughters, Amber Melom of Coeur d'Alene, and Rachelle Dillon and husband Hoss of Coeur d'Alene; one great-grandson, Jayden Mackin, and two great-granddaughters, Janessa Mackin and Amara Palmer, all of Coeur d'Alene; her sister, Lila Maier and husband Eugene; an aunt, Orpha Fessler of California; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Petersen; brothers Raymond, Clayton and Gaylord Paranto; also, sisters Sophie Krank, Gail Paranto and Edna June Florey.
Joyce grew up in Lemmon, S.D., and graduated from Lemmon High School. She married Lyle Petersen on July 20, 1944, in Wolf Point, Mont. They came to live in Hayden, Idaho, in 1955. Joyce was an active mom and PTA member and helped with the hot lunch program at Hayden School. She and her friend, Vivian Gray, spent the summers taking their children down to Honeysuckle Beach. Joyce was a great seamstress and was always making clothes for her daughters. Later in life, Lyle became active in Lions Club. He and Joyce traveled a lot when he became the Lions District Governor in 1985-86. Joyce helped with the bookkeeping at Lyle and Norm's Body Shop for many years.
A visitation and rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, at Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene Chapel, 744 N. Fourth St., Coeur d'Alene, with a funeral Mass scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 625 E. Haycraft Ave., Coeur d'Alene. A graveside service at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery will follow the funeral Mass.
