COEUR d'ALENE - The driver who survived a head-on collision on U.S. 95 on Saturday - which left three others dead - will be charged with three counts of vehicular manslaughter.

Idaho State Police Sgt. Ron Sutton said Monday the felony charges could be filed sometime this week.

The survivor of the crash, 27-year-old Ryan J. Turner, remains at Kootenai Health for treatment of his injuries. Kootenai Health officials didn't release information on his condition.

Turner was driving northbound in the southbound lane in a 2011 Chevy Silverado truck. His truck collided with a 1997 Dodge Caravan heading southbound.

"We believe that alcohol was a factor in the crash," Sutton said.

The laboratory work to determine Turner's blood-alcohol level hasn't been completed, Sutton said.

The minivan was occupied by a father and his two young daughters. They all died at the scene, which was south of Athol and north of Silverwood Theme Park. The accident occurred shortly before 4 a.m.

The three who died were Mathew-Michael T. Baroni, 33; Madilyn Baroni, 8; and Molly Baroni, 6, all of Spokane.

The Spokesman-Review newspaper reported that Mike Baroni worked as an independent contractor hauling copies of the Spokane-based newspaper every morning to Sandpoint.

He was headed home following a drop of newspapers when the collision occurred.

The newspaper said Baroni had his two daughters resting on a mattress during the drive from Sandpoint. ISP said he and his daughters were not wearing seat belts.

The investigation hasn't revealed why Turner was in the wrong lane of travel.

"We don't know at what point (Turner) accessed the highway," Sutton said.

The closest access road to the accident was Parks Road. There is also access at Silverwood.

"He could have driven quite a ways without encountering anyone else," Sutton said. "At that time of day there's not a lot of traffic out."

He said it hasn't been determined why Turner was out there at that time. He said Turner does live in the Spirit Lake area. It has also been reported that he is a Hayden resident.

The crash closed the southbound lanes for approximately four hours.
