Volleyball is in full swing in Lake County, with local teams starting to see how they match up with their conferences. Last week, both undefeated teams in the county, Arlee and Charlo, lost their first matches. Ronan and Mission both struggled, and Polson had their first home game of the season.

Arlee

The Arlee Scarlets went into the week undefeated, and remained that way until Saturday. They traveled to St. Regis on Thursday and beat the Tigers in three. Carly Hergett had a stellar game, with 13 kills, seven blocks, and four digs. Becca Whitesell had 10 assists, and Megan Reed had six aces.

On Saturday, the Scarlets faced a tough Plains team. Plains dropped down into the 10C conference this year. The average height of the team is roughly 5’ 9”, and it showed on Saturday. Plains had 21 kills compared to Arlee’s 13. The Scarlet’s gained momentum in the second game but couldn’t quite finish it off, losing by two, 26-24. They wouldn’t get any closer than that in the third game, and suffered their first loss of the season. On a positive note for the Scarlets, they had 11 aces compared to Plains’ 9, and they had eight blocks compared to Plains’ two. They will face each other again at the end of October. With the amount of talent on the Arlee team, it is unlikely the score will be so lopsided again. Bryndle Goyins had three blocks and six digs for Arlee, Hergett had five aces, and Ashley Revis had four kills.

 Charlo

The Charlo girls had a long week of competition, with three home games in a row. In the most exciting game of the week, they defeated a much taller Plains team in four games. In the first two games, Charlo looked very tough, but needed an extra point to win the second. In the third, Charlo lost momentum and Plains took advantage, beating them 25-6. Charlo bounced back in the fourth and took care of business, defeating Plains 25-22. After the game, Charlo first year coach Cammie Evenson was proud of the girls. She said they didn’t have a specific game plan coming in, even though Plains had a huge height advantage. “We don’t work on a specific game plan during the week. We just practice hard and then make adjustments during the game,” she said. She also praised the team for coming back in the fourth after a tough third game.

Cheyenne Nagy had nine kills for Charlo and four others had at least one. Mikaylan Roylance had 20 assists, and freshman Allie Delaney had eight digs.

On Friday, Charlo handled Noxon, winning by four in the first game and holding them to 12 points in the next two. Nagy had 17 kills for the Vikings, and Ashley Tryon added 10. Nagy also had 14 digs, a block and an ace. Brooklyn Foust had three blocks and nine assists. Allie Delaney added 12 digs. Roylance led the assists with 13.

On Saturday, Charlo struggled, perhaps from playing their third match of the weekend. The undefeated Vikings would lose their first contest to Seeley-Swan in four games. Seeley had 36 kills to Charlo’s 31, which included 13 by Cheyenne Nagy. Allie Delaney led the defense with 17 digs and Ashley Tryon had seven blocks. Kaitlin Cox had five aces.

Polson

Special for the Leader

At Frenchtown on Thursday, the visiting Lady Pirates rallied from a two set deficit to tie the match. Forcing a decisive fifth set, the Lady Broncs were barely able to hold on to emerge with the match. Chadelle Smith led the Lady Pirates with 15 spikes, supplemented by another baker’s dozen from the collaborations of Kaelyn Smith and Lauren Lefthand. Erin Sampson served up a half dozen aces, which Kaelyn Smith and Hannah Fryberger delving out another ten. The defense was spearheaded by Lydia Dupuis and Marlee Congdon, who combined for multiple dozens to keep their team in the hunt.

At Polson on Saturday, the Pirates continued on the upward ascent on the ladder of incremental improvement, sweeping the visiting Yellowjackets in straight sets. Stevensville had dominated Polson at their Tip-Off tournament encounter two weeks prior 25-21, 25-15, but the Lady Pirates flipped the script this time around. Chadelle Smith and Lauren Lefthand combined for 18 kills, while Haley Fyant and Lydia Dupuis collaborated on 10 aces. Dupuis threaded back-to-back service aces at the close of the second set, walking the tightrope of the sideline for a pair of momentum swingers.

Polson (0-1, 1-2) hosts the visiting 7B Lady Bluehawks from Thompson Falls on Tuesday, then travel to Columbia Falls on Thursday for a conference clash with the Kats.
