Football roundup: Arlee remains unbeaten

On Friday in Charlo, the Vikings were celebrating their homecoming, and hoping to pull out a win against their rivals, the Arlee Warriors. Things didn’t start out great for the Vikings, as senior quarterback and all around athlete Michael Delaney was suffering from an ankle injury, and wouldn’t see any playing time.
After exchanging fumbles, Arlee struck first on a Pat Big Sam throw from nine yards out to one of his favorite targets, Tyler Tanner. Three minutes later, Isaac Desjarlais ran one in from five yards, and Big Sam threw to George Shick for the two point conversion to make the score 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Charlo finally answered on a nine-yard run from Jared Doty in the second quarter. After that, Charlo started to gain some momentum, and the hometown crowd really had something to cheer about when Jade Smith ran for 27 yards to score, then added a two point conversion to even up the score at halftime.
Even without Delaney, Charlo held their own in the first half. However, that wasn’t the case in the second. In the third, Brad Brazill scored the only points of the quarter by either team when he tackled Jade Smith in the end zone for a safety.
In the fourth, it was all Arlee. Pat Big Sam showed why he was an All-State player last year by throwing for two touchdowns and running for another to seal the deal for the Warriors. He threaded his first into Tanner between two defenders from nine yards out, then sent one to Desjarlais for a 46-yard score. With five and a half minutes left, he ran the third in from four yards out.
Charlo finally found and answer with three and a half minutes left on a 39-yard run from Toby Odom, but it was a little to late, and Arlee came out on top, 46-20.
Big Sam was 11-20 passing with 215 yards and four touchdowns. Charlo’s Trent Dennison was 5-12 with 60 yards, and threw two interceptions. Arlee had 246 passing yards compared to Charlo’s 60. On the ground, Charlo outdid Arlee with 297 yards compared to 141. Jade Smith had 119 yards on the ground for Charlo, and Big Sam had 62 to lead Arlee. Tyler Tanner had eight catches for 171 yards and three touchdowns for the Warriors, and Desjarlais added 54 yards on three catches and a touchdown.
Both teams had trouble holding on to the ball, as they each had three lost fumbles.
Jared Doty led the defense for the Vikings with six solo tackles. Kane Shenyer had seven tackles with three solos, and Jade Smith had 11 assists.
This week, Arlee, who is now 3-0, heads to Seeley, while Charlo, who falls to 3-1, heads to Plains.
