MATTAWA — Wahluke Junior High will unveil an Associated Student Body-designed and constructed student activity center on April 11.

ASB volunteers have worked on the project for three months. They’ve converted the school stage into a center where students may relax, play and learn.

The ASB students installed active games as well as video games and created an area for students to do their homework or play board games. The murals class, led by Bridget Mitchell, painted every inch of the stage with a space galaxy theme from floor to ceiling.

ASB advisor Joel Dugan said this was done for a lot of reasons, but the top three are:

1. Make the junior high a place that students cannot wait to get to and are knocking on the door in the morning.

2. Have a place to alleviate how crowded the school is becoming and get students moving around before they get to class to increase learning.

3. Teach the students responsibility and the good civic habit of carrying ID (The students will have to show their ASB card to be on the stage).

Dugan said the students used their own ASB funds, which have been raised over the years. They spent just under $5,000 of their own extracurricular money to make this a reality.
