Math contest winners announced

Results are in for the Montana Council of Teachers of Mathematics Math Contest for middle and high school students.

There were about 375 students from eight school districts around the Flathead Valley who participated in the contest held earlier this month at Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell.

Teams took three individual tests and one team test.

In grades 11 and 12 the Whitefish team of Sarah Perez, Walter Sobba, Jack Kahle, Barrett Gray and Nathan Fauth took first place. The Glacier team of Silas Schwarz, Ian Petrini, Jessica Green, Lauren Harmon and Jack Desmul placed second.

Individually, Sobba’s and Gray’s scores earned them $200 scholarships.

In grades 9 and 10 Glacier and Whitefish tied for first place. The Glacier team included Evan Kohler, Katie Dixon, Kimberly Liles, Max Devries and Brooklyn Lamers. Whitefish team members were Ian Caltabiano, Annie Sullivan, Jessica Henson, Regan Tintzman and Abby Lowry.

Second place was also a tie between two Glacier teams whose members were John Sorenson, Baylor Johnson, Keegan Mackenstadt and Michael Schwarz; and Nick Brester, Alden Drew, Sam LaBrant and Brenden Anderson.

At the middle school level, the Kalispell Middle School team of Sierra Riley, Rylee Johnson, Tyler Eldredge, Colter Girardot and Peter Konopka earned first place. Second place was a tie between West Valley School’s Danny Kernan, Travis Wirtala, Dusty Turner, Jadeyn Fincher and Charlie Iannucci and Bigfork Middle School’s Jack Johnson, Mark Whitney and Steven McMullen.

Winning teams received a plaque and prizes.

The following are individual results by grade level:

• Seventh: 1. Eva Bruce; 2. Peter Konopka; 3. Colter Girardot, all Kalispell Middle School.

• Eighth: 1. Tyler Eldredge, Kalispell Middle School; 2. (tie) Sierra Riley, Kalispell Middle School and Danny Kernan, West Valley; 3. Rylee Johnson, Kalispell Middle School.

• Ninth: 1. Evan Kohler, Glacier; 2. Riley Kouns, Flathead; 3. Alex Durado, Glacier.

• Tenth: 1. Alden Drew, Glacier; 2. Noah Love, Flathead; 3. (tie) Zach Ade, Whitefish, Lauren Harmon, Glacier, and Tucker Nadeau, Flathead.

• Eleventh: 1. Silas Schwarz, Glacier; 2. Alex Naglich, Flathead; 3. Harrison Atlas, Flathead.

• Twelfth: 1. Walter Sobba, Whitefish; 2. Barrett Gray, Whitefish; 3. Caleb Hill, Glacier.

Climate change awards announced

Climate Smart Glacier Country announced its Climate Smart Champions during a ceremony at the Earth Day celebration April 21 in Whitefish. Awards were presented to businesses, youth and an individual who are leaders in building local solutions to climate change challenges.
