OTHELLO — Visiting Grandview spoiled an otherwise gorgeous spring day by defeating the Othello 2-1 Saturday at Huskie Field.

Othello was unbeaten and on its home turf, but Grandview took advantage of a Huskie defensive lapse for their first goal and got a little help from the wind to score a second time.

Grandview’s Jose Correa opened the scoring about half-way through the first half.

“We left him unmarked on the throw in,” Othello coach Bernie Garza said. “He took advantage of it with a perfect shot.”

Othello dominated the first five or six minutes of both the first and second half, but Grandview controlled much of the rest of the play. The Huskies managed 11 shots on goal while the Greyhounds were credited with 17 shots.

Othello goalie Jose Chairez had 13 saves while Grandview’s recorded six saves. The wind blew the ball away from Chairez just as he appeared to be in the perfect position to make a save on a shot that turned into the winning goal.

Jonathan Mata scored Grandview’s second goal 67 minutes into the match.

“Their second goal was a well placed shot, but it was wind-aided to escape our goalie,” Garza said.

Although the Huskies had a number of opportunities to score late in the first half, their only goal came from Reese Jones with just under four minutes left in the match.

“We had all kinds of opportunities”, Garza said. “We finished with one, but we should have had more.

The loss was Othell’s final non-league game.

The Huskies travel to Grandview May 3 for their league match with the Greyhounds. Othello hosts Ephrata (3-4) on Tuesday for their CWAC league opener.

Warden 3, Granger 3

GRANGER — Warden had to settle for a 3-3 tie with Granger after allowing a goal in the final seconds.

Warden led 2-0 at halftime behind goals from James Harrison and Tito Rodrigues. Granger evened the game 10 minutes into the second half.

Harrison scored again in the 68th minute, but Uriel Sanchez tied the game in the final seconds of regulation.

Warden (1-6-1) goalie Edgar Alba was credited with 14 saves.

Royal 0, Highland 0

HIGHLAND — Neither Royal nor Highland could find the back of the net in a 0-0 tie.

Carlos Quintero notched three saves for the Knights.
