The national nonprofit Campus Compact has selected a Flathead Valley Community College student to receive the 2016 Newman Civic Fellows Award.
Randall Deffert was one of 218 college students across the United States honored for their commitment in pursuing social change.
Deffert was nominated for the award by FVCC President Jane Karas.
Karas said in a prepared statement that Randall has consistently made sacrifices for the country and the Montana community as an active member of the National Guard and a three-tour veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
“FVCC is fortunate to have many students who are committed to making a positive difference in our community,” Karas said. “Randall is truly outstanding.”
During his time at FVCC, Deffert has volunteered as an assistant in computer classes for senior citizens and has tutored remedial math students.
“I believe that college should be accessible for everyone,” Deffert said. “It is very rewarding to watch seniors become confident computer users.”
Deffert is expected to graduate from FVCC this spring with an Associate of Science degree. He plans to transfer to Montana State University in the fall to study software engineering.
In addition to his volunteer work on campus, Randall has worked with Habitat for Humanity through the college’s Service Saturday events, joining other FVCC students in helping build several homes in the Flathead Valley.
Campus Compact is a Boston-based coalition of nearly 1,100 colleges and universities committed to the public purposes of higher education and dedicated to campus-based civic engagement.
The Newman Civic Fellows Award honors college student leaders who demonstrate an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing their communities.
As a Campus Compact fellow, Deffert will represent FVCC in a national group of student leaders.
These students will receive an award certificate and an invitation to join the Newman Civic Fellows online network.
They will also be featured prominently on the Campus Compact national website and invited to participate in state-specific activities.
