It was a busy first weekend for local track teams. All six schools kicked their season off, with all but Polson competing at the Ronan Invitational on Saturday.

Arlee

Arlee started their season on Thursday in Missoula at the Jim Johnson meet. As a team, the girls took third place behind last year’s Class B state champions, the Plains Trotters, who took second, and last year’s Class C state runner-up, Seeley-Swan, who won the meet.

The Arlee Scarlets return a lot of talent from last year, along with some new faces. Freshman Natalie Yocum had a great week of competition. On Thursday, she took second in the 800, fourth in the mile, and sixth in the 400. Last year’s state runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles, junior Carly Hergett, picked up where she left off, winning the 100-meter hurdles, the long jump, and tying for first in the triple jump. She also tied for fifth in the high jump. Another returner for the team, Ashley Revis, won the 200-meter dash and took fourth in the 100-meter.

The Arlee boys did not place as well as a team, but Brian Baker took fifth in the triple jump, and TJ Knoll tied for third in the pole vault.

On Saturday in Ronan, Baker took fifth in the triple jump again, and TJ Knoll came in fifth in the pole vault. The girls had another good day, this time defeating Plains. Yocum won the mile, took second in the two-mile, and took third in the 800-meter run. Hergett won the 100 hurdles and the triple jump, and took second in the long jump. Revis took second in both the 100 and 200. Arlee’s long relay took first place, and their short relay took second.

Charlo

The Charlo teams also had a good showing at their first meet in Ronan. The boys took second behind Thompson Falls, and the girls took third behind Plains and Arlee.

For the boys, senior Michael Delaney led the team, winning both the 100 and 200-meter runs. He also ran in the winning relay teams. Senior Dugan Runkel took third place in the discus and fourth in the shot put. Bridger Smith took third in the pole vault and sixth in the javelin. Landers Smith took third in the 400 and Chandler Krahn took sixth.

On the girls’ team, the only first place finisher was the short relay team, which was made up of three freshmen in Kaitlin Cox, Allie Delaney and Kara Tatukivei. They were joined by junior Cheyenne Nagy to win the race by a half-second over Arlee. In their first high school meet, those three also placed in other events. Cox took third in the short hurdles and sixth in the triple jump. Tatukivei took sixth in the 100 and fifth in the 200. Delaney, who has been fighting an injury, took second place in the 400. Nagy, who went to state last year in the 300 hurdles, took second in both the 300 and 100 hurdles.

Mission

Mission also competed at the Ronan meet. On the girls’ team, it was once again a freshman who had a good start to the season. Afton Brander scored all of the team’s points, taking sixth in both the 100 hurdles and the high jump.

For the boys, Tate Weingart had a good start, taking fourth in the triple jump and sixth in the mile. Nick Durglo took fourth place in the 200, and Kaleb Durglo took fifth in the 110 hurdles. Mission’s short relay team also took fifth place.

Polson

The Polson track team got started at the Gene Hughes Invitational in Corvallis on Saturday. The Lady Pirates had one first place finisher in Mariah Corrigan, who won the javelin. Teammate Erin Sampson took sixth in the same event. She also took second in the shot put. Malia Seeley did well, taking fourth in the two-mile and fifth in the one-mile. Chadelle Smith took fifth in the 200 and sixth in the 100.

The Polson boys took fifth as a team and were led by Jacob Clairmont, who won the pole vault and the 110-meter hurdles. Danny DiGiallonardo also had a good start to the season, taking second in the 300 hurdles, fifth in the long jump, and sixth in the 100-meter dash. Colton Cote placed fourth in two events – the 200 and 400-meter races. Mike Corrigan started the season off with a third place finish in the discus.

Two Eagle River

Two Eagle River had their first meet on Saturday in Ronan. While no boys put up points, TER’s Danielle Adler had a good day for the girls’ team. She started out the season with a third place finish in the shot put.

Ronan

At their own invitational, the Ronan boys’ team had a good day, taking fourth place as a team. A number of different athletes had good days, including junior Jackson Duffey, who took second in the two-mile and fourth in the one-mile. Nathan Dennis came in right behind him in both races, taking third in the two-mile and fifth in the one-mile. Brennan Roullier took third in the 110 hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles. Tyler Houle had a good start to the year, taking second in the pole vault.

For the girls, junior Lee Camel took third in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump. Ashley McCready took fourth in the two-mile and fourth in the one-mile. Kara Holmlund took fifth in the shot put, and Ally Buhr took second in the pole vault.
