Glacier, after four weeks of practice, finally has some times and marks to work with.

The Wolfpack boys opened the track season on a near-perfect day Thursday afternoon by dominating a dual with Great Falls High at the Glacier track.

They won 10 of 17 events en route to a 94.5-50.5 win over the Bison. Glacier won all the events on the track, except for the two hurdle races, and had firsts in the discus and javelin.

The girls piled up 14 firsts, led by double winners Avril Baines on the track, Nikki Krueger in the field events and Adrian Schnee on the track and in the field, for a 113-31 victory over Great Falls.

Baines won the 1,600 (6:09.11) and 3,200 (14.26.24), Krueger had the best distances in the shot put (37-7) and discus (117-2) and Schnee won the 400 (1:07.35) and high jump (4-11).

Other individual winners for the Glacier girls were: Bailey Smith, 800 (2:24.11), Ahna Kreitinger, 300 hurdles (46.67), Josephine Sherman, pole vault (8-6), Bryn McChesney, long jump (15-11.25), Abigail Fiske, triple jump (33-5) and Bailey Rigg, javelin (107-1).

Glacier also won both relays.

“Our upper classmen did what they needed to do,” Glacier girls coach Jerry Boschee said.

“Nikki Krueger, Melanie Gassaway, Courtney Mitchell, Ahna Kreitinger, Bailey Smith — those kids have been to state before. They kind of picked up right where they left off.”

Gassaway was second in the shot put and third in the discus, while Mitchell was second in the discus and third in the shot put.

“It was a good start,” Boschee said.

“You couldn’t ask for a better day (warm temps and plenty of sunshine) to introduce young kids to track and field. Days like this get kids hooked on track.”

Boschee said of the 67 girls on the roster, 30 had never competed in a track meet before.

There were no double winners for the Glacier boys. Placing first were: Ethan Larson, 100 (11.54), Scout Willcut, 200 (23.57), Thomas Chalfant, 400 (53.59), Elijah Boyd, 800 (2:05.72), Tevyn Stetson, 1,600 (4:38.46), Joseph VandenBos, 3,200 (10:56.17), Brycer Grame, discus (126-8.5) and Sean Kopchincky, javelin (155-7).

Glacier’s other two wins were in the relays.

“I hope this sets us up for an exciting spring,” Glacier boys coach Arron Deck said.

“It was kind of exciting to look out there and get some results on paper. Now we can go from there.”

He said the 400 relay squad looked sharp.

“They are ahead of schedule,” he said.

“Some nice handoffs.

“Our goal every year is to build depth,” he said.

“One of the highlights was the 800. We had a lot of young kids run some good times.”

Although only the top three finishers in a dual place, Glacier had five runners in the top six in that event.

“After your first outing, you always have stuff to work on and get better at,” Deck said.

Great Falls and Glacier were both missing athletes because of music festivals.

Glacier distance standout Annie Hill is in California competing at a high school event.
