State results are in and Flathead FFA continues to shine.
Twenty-six students competed in a variety of agricultural and leadership career development events March 30 through April 2 at the Montana FFA state convention in Bozeman. Students also participated in general sessions and workshops.
Flathead FFA member Brock Reiner was named the Montana FFA sentinel officer for the 2016-17 school year.
Two runner-up state champion teams were the livestock evaluation team of SharDay Hilliard, Livia Jackola, Meghan Levanen and Sarah Peterson; and the parliamentary procedure team of Karly Hanson, Katherine Hill, James Jepsen, Brock Reiner, Kaitlin Uskoski and Shanna Uskoski.
The state forestry and veterinary science career development events were held March 12 in Missoula. The Flathead FFA forestry team of Augusta Cahill, Gray Gordon, Jayde Nail, Amber Reiner, Brock Reiner, Weston Taylor and Destiny Wallace placed third.
Jackola was selected as the state Star winner in agribusiness for her work in an entrepreneurship supervised agricultural experience. A supervised agricultural experience can be research or other work in an industry or workplace.
Star award finalists included Hanson in agriscience and Shanna Uskoski in ag placement.
Based on student supervised agricultural experiences the following students were selected as state winners and will have their applications represent Montana at the national level next fall in the following categories and programs: Sandra Ek, ag mechanics repair and maintenance in the placement program; Tyler Whiteman, diversified crop production in the placement program; Jackola, equine science in the entrepreneurship program; Shanna Uskoski, nursery operations in the placement program and Darian Enders, veterinary science in the placement program.
Sixteen students, including Star award winners and finalists, achieved state FFA degrees — the highest rank at state. Degree recipients are Hannah Bass, Ek, Enders, Hanson, Hill, Hilliard, Jackola, Peterson, Brock Reiner, Courtney Rufenach, Noelle Senner, Kaileigh Sidmore, Kaitlin Uskoski, Shanna Uskoski, Destiny Wallace and Whiteman.
Once again Flathead FFA earned the Star chapter award, which recognizes competition results in addition to the chapter’s activities throughout the year that focus on student, chapter and community development.
The Flathead chapter was also rated “gold,” a status given to the top 10 percent. This means chapter members advance to nationals where they will be rated either a one-, two- or three-star chapter, according to adviser Justin Heupel.
Both Flathead and Glacier high school students make up the Flathead FFA.
“There are 90 FFA chapters in Montana and approximately 5,000 members,” Heupel said in an email to the Daily Inter Lake. “We are very proud to be among the top in almost every measurable category.”
