People around the world will celebrate Earth Day on Friday and in Lincoln County the event is expected to bring a mass exodus of old electronic appliances and the county’s Health Department hosts free E-waste recycling in Libby and Troy.

E-waste receptacles will be on hand at Kootenai Disposal in Libby at 34745 U.S. 2 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

In Troy receptacles will be on hand from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Friday at All Systems Go in the Troy Mini Mall parking lot.

Computers (CPUs), laptops, flat panel displays, monitors, keyboards, printers, mice, hard drives, tape and zip drives, fax machines, gaming consoles, power supplies, networking equipment, modems, routers, switches, servers, printed circuit boards, televisions, DVD Players, VCRs including TV/VCR combos, telephones, cell Phones, digital cameras, radios, cables and cords, stereo components, lab equipment with electronic components and microwave ovens.

The only household appliances that can be accepted are televisions and microwaves.

The event is hosted by Lincoln County Health Department, Collective Recyclers, Kootenai Disposal and All Systems Go.

Last fall the department sent more than 17.6 tons off for recycling in a similar event.

According to the department, Americans dispose of 142,000 computers and over 416,000 mobile devices every day. The e-waste represents 2 percent of trash in landfills, but contain 70 percent of toxins that can pollute water, soil and air, and can cause many health problems.

There will also be an Earth Day Festival Friday from 12- 4 p.m. at the Libby Area Community Garden at Asa Wood.
