COLUMBIA FALLS — Columbia Falls won both team titles and posted some big numbers on Saturday at its Iceberg Invitational at Columbia Falls Junior High School.

Senior sprinter Tanner Dana set the tone for the Columbia Falls boys with a banner day. Dana won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes and ran the anchor leg of the Wildcats’ winning 400 relay team.

The boys won with relative ease by 47.5 points over Frenchtown, which saw senior Parker Spadt clear 6 feet, 4 inches in the high jump. Columbia Falls’ Kyler Burns qualified for state in the event, finishing second while clearing 6-2.

Whitefish’s Luke May won the javelin with a monstrous throw of 205-4, the longest in the state this season by more than nine feet.

Stevensville’s Hunter Casey won the 800 and 300 hurdles and Cut Bank’s Seth Omsberg won the long and triple jumps.

The Columbia Falls girls edged Whitefish by 10 points in the other team race.

Columbia Falls senior Ashley Caffrey won the pole vault with a season best height of 10-6, the second highest mark in the state this season and the best in Class A.

Mary Baker won the 100 and 200, Kaitlyn Casazza swept the hurdles and Kiara Burlage won the javelin with a season best throw of 114-8 for the Wildkats.

Whitefish’s Barrett Gray won the 3,200, setting a state qualifying mark of 12:10.61. Shelby’s Kim Parsell won the 400 and 1,600 and Stevensville’s Mariah Hinson won the long and triple jumps.

Great Falls Optimist

GREAT FALLS — Running in a pouring rain and driving wind, Billings Senior’s Christina Aragon, a senior, and Glacier sophomore Annie Hill put on a show in two distance races at the elite Great Falls Optimist Meet at Memorial Stadium.

Aragon destroyed meet records in a pair of races with the Wolfpack phenom, posting the second-best mark in the nation this season in the 1,600-meter run at 4:43.58. Hill’s second-place finish in 4:44.67 is the third fastest in the nation.

Aragon also outlegged Hill in the 800 with a record time of 2:11.93. Hill finished in 2:14.79.

Flathead’s Gillian Maness and Kaitlin Wride set season-bet times in the 1,600 while chasing the two sprinting out front. Maness won the 3,200 with a season-best time of 11:13.58 and Wride was third in the race, topping her season best by 32 seconds.

Glacier’s Nikki Krueger was named the top thrower of the meet after winning the shot put and discus. Krueger had a toss of 38 feet, 4.5 inches in the shot to top her season best by a foot and landed at 119-5 in the discus.

Glacier’s Melanie Gassaway qualified for state in the shot put, finishing third at 36-7.5 and Flathead’s Liz Lorentz tossed a season best 35-5 in the event to finish fifth.

Flathead’s Lizzie Sherwood threw 127-3 in the javelin to finish second and increase her best toss of the season by more than seven feet.

Glacier’s Abi Fiske tied for the best triple jump at the meet at 34-7.25 but finished second on jumps.

Libby Invitational

LIBBY — The Libby girls held strong at their invitational at Logger Stadium, easily winning the team title.

Emily Mossburg won the 200 and the 800 and Lauren Thorstenson won the 1,600 and 3,200 for the Loggers, who also swept the relays on the girls side.

Thompson Falls’ Shey Hannum won the high jump, javelin and 300 hurdles.

The Thompson Falls boys edged Eureka by 3.5 points. Tanner Laws won the 800 and 1,600 and Josh Wulfekuhle swept the hurdles for the Blue Hawks.

Troy’s Sean Opland was the star, winning the 100, 200, high jump and long jump.

Eureka’s Garrett Graves qualified for state with a win in the triple jump at 40 feet, 9.25 inches.

MISSOULA — The Bigfork boys and girls both finished second in the team standings and had four individuals winners on a wet, damp day at Missoula County Stadium.

Logan Morley won the 800 (2:04.55) and 1,600 (4:36.77), Ross Coleman had the best distance in the shot put (45 feet, 9 inches), Bryn Morley posted the best time in the 800 (2:18.07) and Anya Young took first place in the 1,600 (5:26.05).

Bigfork’s other first was turned in by the girls 400 relay team of Jordan Nelson, Madison Gardner, Mattison McAnally and Haile Norred, who were timed in 51.04.

The pole vault was not held for safety concerns.
