TRACK: Glacier dials back at host meet
DAVID LESNICK | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 8 years, 6 months AGO
With three track meets in five days for Glacier’s athletes, Thursday’s quadrangular with Bigfork, Eureka and Ronan at Glacier High School was a relaxed affair.
“It was low key,” Glacier girls coach Jerry Boschee said.
“This is our work week with a whirlwind of meets going on, so it was nice to have a three-hour meet and get something out of it. It was a productive day for everyone. All of the schools have pretty good athletes to give our kids some competition.”
Several of Glacier’s top runners, throwers and jumpers, who participated Tuesday in the The Top 10 meet in Missoula, either had the day off for this one, or scaled back on the number of events they usually compete in. Glacier’s Hunter Nicholson was one of those. He competed, but concentrated on just the triple jump while taking the day off from the long jump and high jump. He tied for fifth with three others in Missoula in the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 11 inches.
In the quad, he won the triple jump with a personal best distance of 42 feet, 5 3/4 inches, which also bettered the state qualifying standard by almost four inches.
“The first meet I’ve had a mark (successful jump) this year,” Nicholson said.
“I’ve scratched on all my previous jumps.”
He was on the mark for all four attempts this time. He opened at 41-9 and went 41-0 and 40-9 on his last two efforts. It was a promising and pretty consistent showing overall by the sophomore.
“All of mine counted today,” he said.
“That was a big improvement.
“Today I got the distance I needed. I kept my knees up to carry the momentum into the pits.”
Nicholson placed fifth at state in the triple jump last year with a distance of 42-4.
Glacier junior Bailey Smith used this outing to check her rehabilitation progress after suffering a hip injury. She easily won the 1,600 with a time of 5 minutes, 27.74 seconds, finishing nearly 30 seconds ahead of the runner-up and lapping the last runner at the finish line.
“It’s tight, but no pain,” she said after her run.
“I just competed today to see how my hip felt. I wasn’t too worried about my time.”
She has not competed in the last two meets because of the injury, which caused her to miss Tuesday’s prestigious meet in Missoula.
The quad had one double winner — Glacier’s Ethan Larson in the 100 (11.55) and 200 (23.33).
Glacier’s busy week ends Saturday in Whitefish at the ARM Invitational.
