SANDPOINT — A structure fire on Fir Street left a Sandpoint family displaced from their home Tuesday.
Ron Stocking, fire chief for Selkirk Fire, Rescue and EMS, said firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire at 1:25 p.m., where they found heavy smoke and fire coming from the two-story home.
He said 14 firefighters from Selkirk Fire and Westside Fire District made an aggressive interior attack and had the fire extinguished within 30 minutes. About $30,000 in damage was caused by the fire, with about $170,000 saved, Stocking said.
Two of the five people who reside at the residence were home when the fire broke out, and Stocking said the smoke detector alerted them to the fire.
"Selkirk Fire would like to remind people to make sure they have functioning smoke detectors in their house because this definitely had a result on these people being able to get out of the house safely," Stocking said.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Idaho State Fire Marshal, Stocking said.
