The difference between recreation and re-creation

Jeanne, Benjamin and I just got back from a wonderful vacation. We traveled to the west side of the state – to Hood Canal, Port Angeles and Port Townsend. We took care of a mini-ranch for a while, explored the banks of the Elwha River and its newly formed delta, and had plenty of beach time at a number of other locations.

One of my passions is macrophotography. So, yes, I took my camera along. I photographed plenty of insects and spiders on the trip. This was no different than what I would typically do in Moses Lake.

I took time off from writing, which is a great passion of mine, and instead filled these days with many new and different things. On a vacation, I want to take in what I wouldn’t ordinarily experience.

At times we can get into a rut. It is nice to take a break from a typical weekly routine and recharge our batteries. This helps us to avoid burnout and encourages a positive work ethic once we return to “the grind.”

There is a term that I love to use for this sort of thing. Some might call it recreation. However, I refer to this as “re-creation,” which goes far deeper.

If I am intentional about this, and open-minded enough, re-creation can exist within my recreational activities; for example, as I hike, I can reflect upon my life with God.

Re-creation involves quietly listening to God with hectic pace, noise and clutter removed. This environment aids greater clarity and discernment – of God directing us.

Re-creation is a precious gift. When you have such opportunities, cherish them. They are times when God may truly have your undivided attention. This investment can renew your spirit in a very special way.

Isaiah 40:41 – “…but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

So I'm going to my high school reunion

I’ve decided to go to my 40th high school reunion on the western side of the state. It will happen on Saturday. I’ve been to two of them in the past. I had to force myself to go. You see, high school was not a good experience for me.

Do you feel uncomfortable around them?

Twice a month, we have a care-giver come over to the house to be with our son, Benjamin, who has Down Syndrome. Her name is Delaina. We deeply appreciate the service that she offers. We are fortunate to have her present with Benjamin while we take time for ourselves.
