Lockwood earns doctoral degree

Benjamin Lockwood (SHS ’04) graduated on May 26 with a doctoral degree in economics from Harvard University.

His area of focus is public economics — the study of government policy, taxation, and spending. His dissertation studied the optimal use of work subsidies as a way to improve the lives of low income people, as well as the use of income taxation to encourage talented individuals to pursue professions which are beneficial for society.

While at Harvard, Lockwood wrote papers published in the Journal of Public Economics, the Journal of Political Economy, and the Journal of Monetary Economics.

Lockwood lives in Boston with his wife Lauren Fiedler Lockwood (SHS ’04) and their son, Theo. Lockwood will be joining the faculty of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania in the fall, where he will teach economics and continue his research on inequality and optimal taxation.

Armstrong graduates Fort Lewis College

Allyson Armstrong of Sagle graduated from Fort Lewis College on April 30, 2016.

Armstrong received a bachelor’s degree with a major in business administration. Over 500 students participated in the spring commencement ceremony.

Krames receives Menser scholarship

The First Presbyterian Church of Sandpoint has awarded the Betty Menser Memorial Scholastic Scholarship to Alexandra Krames, a senior at the City College of New York and a 2013 graduate of Sandpoint High School. She is the daughter of Paul and Charlene Krames of Sagle and granddaughter of Sylvia and Charles Humes of Sandpoint.

Alexandra is enrolled in the humanities program at City College majoring in theater and minoring in education. This year she won the department-wide directing competition for directing a one-act play. Betty Menser was a member of the church since the 1980s, and was a university level educator specializing in speech communications throughout her career in education.

This scholarship was set up by her husband Harry Menser as a memorial following Betty’s death and is administered by the Presbyterian Women’s organization of which she was moderator for many years. A check has been sent to Alexandra’s school to help supplement her educational expenses.

Roberson earns academic honors

Alexandria Roberson of Careywood was named to the dean’s list at Wells College for the spring 2016 semester. Roberson, a member of the class of 2016, majored in biology and was a member of the women’s lacrosse team. She is a graduate of West Forsyth High School.

The dean’s list consists of students who earn at least a 3.5 grade point average for at least 12 hours of coursework in a given semester. About 35 percent of Wells students earned the honor during the spring semester.

Van Ooyen named to St. Lawrence University dean’s list

Jenny V. Van Ooyen of Sandpoint has been selected for inclusion on the dean’s list for academic achievement during the spring 2016 semester at St. Lawrence University.

Van Ooyen is a member of the class of 2016 and is majoring in environmental studies. She attended Sandpoint High School.

To be eligible for the dean’s list, a student must have completed at least four courses and have an academic average of 3.6 based on a 4.0 scale for the semester.

Jessen named to Seaver College dean’s list

Pepperdine University student Nicolette Jessen, a native of Sagle has been named to the Seaver College Dean’s List for the spring 2016 semester.

In order to earn dean’s list honors, students must be in the upper 10 percent of their class and maintain a 3.5 or higher grade point average. This year Jessen is one of only 295 students to receive the honor.

The purpose of the dean’s list is to provide recognition for the positive academic achievements of students at the Seaver College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences and to serve as an additional incentive for academic excellence to all students.

Seaver College, located in Malibu, Calif., is the undergraduate school for Pepperdine University.

Students graduate from Whitworth University

A quartet of Bonner County students have graduated from Whitworth University.

Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private, liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church. The university, which has an enrollment of nearly 3,000 students, offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

Earning degrees were Robert Blair, Sagle, bachelor of science in biology; Marianne Sfeir, Sagle, bachelor of arts, inpsychology, summa cum laude; Dustin Corbett, Sandpoint, bachelor of arts in political science, cum laude; and Kevin Kirby, Sandpoint, bachelor of arts in business management.
