SANDPOINT — A Blanchard man’s trial on charges that he kidnapped and raped his former girlfriend last spring is being pushed back slightly as discovery in the case continues.
A pretrial hearing in Joe Frederick Ransom’s case was reset for Sept. 23. His jury trial was reset for October, 1st District Court records show.
A pretrial hearing on Friday revealed a resolution had not been reached to eliminate the need for a trial.
Ransom, 54, is accused of kidnapping and raping the 52-year-old woman after the two visited bars in Blanchard and Spirit Lake on April 22. The woman testified during a preliminary hearing that Ransom was upset with her because she was seeing other men after their relationship ended.
Ransom allegedly attacked the woman in her home, threatened to kill her and made her phone family members to say final goodbyes. Ransom also allegedly threatened to mutilate her with a pocketknife and forced himself on her toward the end of the prolonged ordeal.
The woman alerted authorities after Ransom left the home to eat breakfast, according to court documents. Ransom admitted having sexual intercourse with the woman, but denied all of the other allegations, court records indicate.
Ransom is being held at the county jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.
Ransom was prosecuted for attempted second-degree murder, kidnapping, robbery and aggravated assault in Escambia County, Fla., in 1996, according to the Florida Department of Corrections. He was convicted and sentenced to 21 years in prison in 2006. He was released in 2014, the Florida corrections website said.
