MILESTONE BIRTHDAYS
Richard (Dick) W. DeWolf
100th Birthday
Here is a little history of Richard (Dick) W. DeWolf.
He was born Sept. 1, 1916, in Storm Lake, Iowa.
He attended three elementary schools in Iowa: Des Moines, Waterloo and Lemars.
He also attended Orange City Junior High School and graduated from Orange City High School in 1934. In 1933, he received the Eagle Scouts Badge from the Boy Scouts.
He attended North Western Junior College in Orange City for one year.
His family moved to the Los Angeles, Calif., area where he started employment. About the same time Leona moved to California from Iowa, to stay with her sister and started working. They met, fell in love, and went back to Iowa to be married June 20, 1942, in Sheldon, Iowa, with 200 guests in attendance. They made their home in Southern California, and were blessed with three wonderful children: Douglas, Madlyn and David.
As a family they spent many wonderful vacations camping with other family members and longtime friends. They were both very active in their church: Glendale Presbyterian.
In 1968, Dick was transferred to Northern California as he had been working with Centennial Mills. Again they became very involved in the Walnut Creek Presbyterian church.
In 1981, they retired from their jobs, sold their home, bought a truck and fifth wheel and became active in MMAP (Mobile Missionary Assistant Program). They traveled to many camps and churches to help build, repair, paint, or whatever was needed where they were staying at the time. When they weren’t on jobs, they resided with Doug’s family in Brentwood, Calif., and eventually took up permanent residence there, and attended and became active in Grace Community Church.
Dick and Leona celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Doug’s home with Madlyn and her family, and Dave and his family helping to give them a beautiful celebration.
In July 1997, his precious Leona went to be with the Lord and Dick moved to Placerville, Calif., to live on Dave and Cari’s property until 2010. He then moved to Kirkland, Wash., to be near Madlyn and Joe until 2014, when he moved to Coeur d’Alene to be near Doug and Carol. He resides at Bestland Independent Senior Living.
Dick and Leona were blessed with six grandchildren and now 14 great-grandchildren.
So much has happened in the world over these 100 years. During all this time — lots good and some not so good — he has relied on the Lord for his strength. Dick and Leona together have helped many people through their love for the Lord and love for family and friends.
He will celebrate his birthday on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016, at Bestland, then again on Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, with a barbecue at his daughter-in-law Carol’s home, and finally a gala event on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, at His Place Church in Post Falls. There will be friends and family attending from out of town to help make this a very special time of celebration for Dick. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
