A man was safely taken into custody after a standoff with police in Glacier Pines RV Park on Thursday afternoon in Evergreen, Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry said.

The standoff ended at 5 p.m., approximately three hours after it began, according to Curry. A special response team was sent out to a report of a suicidal man, who had barricaded himself inside the park, Curry said. The park is located on U.S. 2.

Five large bangs were heard from inside the park between 4:35 p.m. and 4:52 p.m. The sheriff said those were the sounds of tear gas being deployed. By 5 p.m., the incident was over.

“No one was injured,” Curry said.

Montana Highway Patrolman James Hawkins said residents were asked to leave during the event, and that they were very understanding of the situation, even when they couldn’t return to their homes on the cold and dreary day.

“We’ve been really appreciative,” Hawkins said. “They’ve been really accepting.”
