Four local nonprofits received $5,000 each Tuesday from the North Idaho Housing Coalition.

The nonprofit housing coalition works to build strong communities by increasing access to decent and affordable homes for low- to moderate-income individuals and families.

“Our board is grateful to our director, Lori Isenberg, for her stewardship and the oversight that makes it possible for the North Idaho Housing Coalition to go beyond our own scope of work to contribute to the efforts of Safe Passages, Family Promise of North Idaho, Idaho Youth Ranch and UGM in serving our community’s vulnerable population,” said Kerri Thoreson, NIHC president.

Each of these agencies receiving $5,000 from NIHC are participating in the Home Partnership Foundation’s annual Avenues for Hope Housing Challenge (avenuesforhope.org) which is providing a full match for the $5,000 through Dec. 31.

“We encourage the community to consider contributing as well to the Avenues for Hope program to be a blessing to those organizations who are making a difference right here,” Thoreson said.

In Kootenai County, housing costs have increased by approximately 35 percent since 2009, while wages have only increased 4 percent overall, and in fact have decreased for many. The North Idaho Housing Coalition has assisted nearly 100 qualified families/individuals in purchasing a home since 2009.
