Rann, Tom and Ethel make a perfect gift

COEUR d’ALENE — In late June when Rann Haight’s book “Tomorrow is...The First Year” was published, he might have harbored secret hopes that it’d soon hit the New York Times bestseller list.
But he’s a professional architect and a businessman, so he hedged his bet.
“I’ve got an attic,” he told a journalist who asked what he’d do if the 500 personally numbered items didn’t swiftly sell out. Haight added that they’d make pretty nifty Christmas gifts.
That was June. This is now.
It’s Christmas time, and have we got a cool gift for you.
Haight, perhaps best known in these parts for his sensational Christmas cards, is selling the collection of special “Tomorrow Is...” cartoon panels for $14.95. The books are available in the Coeur d’Alene Press lobby, 215 N. Second St. in downtown Coeur d’Alene.
From day to day you never know what’s coming — kind of like tomorrow — but through the first year of publication, Tom, Ethel and a cast of many recognizable figures rewarded Press readers whenever they turned to the second page of the paper. That’s where the panel almost always runs.
When floating samples of his work to national syndicates, Haight repeatedly was told that the writing was more important than the artwork. He disagreed — and we’re glad he did. Tom, at the bus stop, and Ethel, pumping gas and boasting bodacious bumper stickers, are in themselves works of art.
If you’re looking for something special — technically, every numbered copy is unique — pick up a copy of “Tomorrow is...The First Year” today.
