PREP ROUNDUP: Genesis Prep girls edge Kootenai

POST FALLS — Bella Murekatete scored inside off an inbounds pass from Rachel Schroeder with 3 seconds left, lifting the Genesis Prep Jaguars past the Kootenai Warriors 48-47 in a North Star League girls basketball thriller Friday night at Post Falls Middle School.

Murekatete finished with 22 points and nine rebounds for Genesis Prep (3-0, 1-0 NSL), and Schroder had 11 points and seven assists. But both were saddled with foul trouble in the first half, as Kootenai took a 23-18 halftime lead.

“They did a good job going inside,” Genesis Prep coach Debbie Holte said of Kootenai. “We were inconsistent ... really we refocused at halftime, and did a great job in the third quarter turning things around.”

Kaili Gentry scored 18 points and Paxton Dotson added 14 for Kootenai (2-3, 1-1), which led by three points late in the game.

Josie Scribner grabbed eight rebounds for Genesis Prep, which travels to Mullan on Tuesday.

Kootenai visits Lakeside next Friday.

PASCO, Wash. — The Timberwolves were shorthanded due to injury and illness, so Nina Carlson moved to point guard and scored 20 points to lead Lake City past the Bulldogs.

“We responded well after not playing well (in a 64-42 loss to Richland on Wednesday) and were a little shorthanded with only six varsity kids,” Lake City coach Bryan Kelly said. “Nina played the point and did a great job.”

Bridget Rieken had 14 points, 12 rebounds and six assists and Keara Simpson nine points and 12 rebounds for Lake City (6-1), which travels to Cheney on Tuesday.

“It was a team effort, and we had some people step up and take exception to how we played, and the girls responded,” Kelly said. “Keara and Bridget did a great job on the boards and we manned up and played great defense.”

SANDPOINT — The visiting Tigers drained 11 3-pointers in beating the Bulldogs for the second time this season, this time at Les Rogers Court.

Keelie Lawler scored 20 points, dropping four 3-pointers, to go with six assists and five boards for Timberlake (7-1), Jacquelyn Mallet added 15 points and Allison Kirby and McKeeley Tonkin each hit three 3-pointers in a strong shooting display.

“I was happy with our half-court offense, we shot the ball well, with confidence and no hesitation,” said Tigers coach Matt Miller, whose team owns wins over Coeur d’Alene, Lewiston and Gonzaga Prep already this season. “We executed well on both ends.”

Junior Grace Kirscher led the Bulldogs (1-5) with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists, and Trinity Golder hit two 3-pointers among her 12 points.

Timberlake travels to Lapwai today at 2:30.

Rachael Arthur added 13 points, five assists and two steals for the Knights (3-0) who host North Idaho Christian on Tuesday.

RICHLAND, Wash. — Sophomore Cole Northrop hit 7 of 11 3-pointers and scored 43 points as the host Bombers handed the Trojans their first loss in a game arranged earlier that day.

“I haven’t seen a kid shoot it like that since (former Post Falls star) Connor Hill,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “He probably had four 3s from beyond 25 feet. We heard he was a shooter, and we ran everybody at him. He was rolling.”

Post Falls and Richland were scheduled to play Camas (Wash.) and Skyview of Vancouver, Wash., on Friday and Saturday, but the southwestern Washington schools cancelled because of snow.

Colby Gennett had 20 points, five rebounds and three steals for Post Falls (4-1), which trailed 73-72 with 1:12 left, before Richland pulled away from the free-throw line.

“Richland has a very hostile environment, and on the road for our first real challenge of the season, I was happy with how our guys competed,” McLean said.

Jake Pfennigs had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Post Falls, which rescheduled the Camas game for Wednesday at Camas.

PASCO, Wash. — James Carlson scored 20 points and Duncan Butler had 10 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Timberwolves past the Bulldogs.

Kenny Louie-McGee scored 17 points and Kodie Kolden had 13 points and five assists for Lake City, which outscored Pasco 44-25 in the second half.

“We just played like we’re capable of in the second half,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “In the first half, we weren’t ourselves. We had the three hour bus ride and just weren’t ourselves. In the second half, we decided to get after it, and we really did and played the way we’re capable of. We got after some guys defensively, and everything was just better in the second half. It was a good road win and extremely well played second half.”

“We passed the ball well; we just executed really well,” Timberlake coach Michael Scott said.

Bryar Sanchez scored 13 points and Alex Pakootas had eight rebounds for Lakeside (1-2), which hosts North Idaho Christian on Tuesday.

“They controlled the boards and were more active on defense than we were,” Lakeside coach Bob Wolcott said. “Once they got a lead, they shot a good percentage and we struggled to get the ball to drop.”
