COEUR d'ALENE — With 6,826 raffle tickets sold for a chance to win a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek, the Post Falls High band provided the drum roll for the highly-anticipated announcement of the winner.
After the ticket was drawn, PFHS Athletic Director Craig Christensen tried his darndest to read the winner's name.
But, after multiple attempts to pronounce what he thought he may be reading, neither a clear last name nor the winner surfaced, leaving those at Thursday night's Post Falls-Lakeland boys' basketball game in mystery.
Rick and Tammy Villafondo, who live near Spirit Lake, ended the public's suspense when they pulled up to Parker Subaru on Friday morning to claim the vehicle.
"Incredible; it still isn't real," Rick said, shortly after being handed the keys. "We woke up wondering if it could be April Fool's Day."
Parker Subaru donated the vehicle valued at $27,000 for the raffle that benefitted extra-curricular programs at Timberlake, Post Falls and Lakeland high schools. With 6,826 $10 tickets sold by students at those schools, the fundraiser generated a total of $68,260.
"It raises some much-needed funds for the schools," said Chris Leonard, Parker Subaru's general manager. "We are very happy to do this."
Rick is a pitching coach for the Timberlake High baseball team and his son, Seth, who is on the squad, actually purchased the raffle ticket and wrote his dad's name on it.
"He's already negotiating," Rick said of his son.
With a laugh, Rick said Seth's handwriting was why his last name couldn't be read during the game.
When Leonard called Rick later on Thursday night to tell him he'd won the car, Rick said he wondered if it was a scam so he contacted another Parker dealership employee to verify it was true.
"I needed to see if Chris was legitimate," Rick said with a smile.
Thinking that Seth may bring his parents more luck, Tammy had Seth choose lottery numbers for her on Friday.
"We'll be rubbing his head a lot," Rick said.
Rick and Tammy recently purchased a Nissan Pathfinder, but Rick said sitting in the Crosstrek felt comfortable, so they may have some thinking to do in the coming days regarding vehicles.
This was the sixth year Parker Subaru donated a vehicle for the fundraiser. Parker Toyota also donates a vehicle for a similar raffle that benefits programs at Coeur d'Alene and Lake City high schools.
